US House Speaker vote - Live Thread

As expected, there hasn’t been a single defection so far on the Democratic side, with the party united in its support of Jeffries.

Michael Cloud votes for Jim Jordan for speaker. That’s the fifth vote against him, meaning he doesn’t have the votes on the first ballot -- unless some members decline to vote or change their votes.

5 Republicans have already voted against McCarthy for speaker ... if there are no D defections, he has already lost.
If members change their vote, of if enough member dont vote or vote "present", the threshold changes. Or at least that's how I remember it working.

It's likely the nuts will 'make their point' be defeating him on the first ballot, but lacking any plan for anything else, they'll probably let him be speaker. The corrupt will win, rather than the corrupt nuts.

Probably, yeah. I mean, if I was GOP and hated him, I would still want McCarthy as speaker.

Another example of minority rule, and the minority in this case are insurrectionists. If you don't think we are a very free country, I give this example of rule by pro-criminal, anti-American, anti-Constitution insurrectionists.

Any guesses as to who will win?

Now is the time for the republican and democrat moderates to throw off the party extremists and caucus to gain the leadership.

All the coverage I've on the Speaker race has focused on McCarthy. Does anyone have thoughts as to other likely potential GOP candidates?

Despite your "moderate" fixation, your false equivalency between the parties is quite false, and the bigger issue is the core corruption of the 'moderate' members more than the 'extremists', who are Republican and bad on their own. Mitch McConnell is a 'moderate', corrupt, and does more harm than all the 'extremists' combined.

None that can win, but Jim Jordan looks like the next.

Republicans give a standing ovation for McCarthy after he votes for himself.

Mary Miller of Illinois, who successfully knocked out a close McCarthy ally in a primary, votes for Jim Jordan of Ohio.
