The 1st sequel to the New Line Cinema film The Golden Compass (based on the Pullman novel series His Dark Memories) was originally scheduled for release this December.

However, according to actor Sam Elliot, The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights has pressured New Line into not releasing an "atheist film" (according to them) near Christmas season:

From the Daily Telegraph:

Sam Elliot - "The Catholic church happened to The Golden Compass, as far as I'm concerned. ...It did incredible at the box office, taking $380 million. Incredible. It took $85 million in the States...The Catholic Church... lambasted them and I think it scared New Line off."

Bill Donohue, of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, called on parents to boycott the film for attempting to "introduce Christian children to the wonders of atheism in a backdoor fashion at Christmas time...I knew if we could hurt the box office receipts here, it might put the brakes on the next movie."

If you would like to contact New line and ask them to continue to release the sequels, you can email them here:

movies@newline.com

New Line is a private business. They chose to comply... it's their choice. I see nothing wrong with this.

so what's wrong with the golden compass? it has anti christian undertones

maybe, as a non christian, i should start complaining about the chronicles of narnia, and saying they shouldnt release that 'cause it can be interpreted as an allegory to christianity

it just a load of crap, if they don't like it, don't watch it, children probably wouldnt pick up the undertones in it anyway

The Chronicles of Narnia IS an allegory to Christianity.

IMO, the church can pressure who they want, and whoever they pressure can comply or not. Either way, it's all good.

isn't that the same as people wanting nativity scenes and the like banned on public property, and people complain about them pressuring churches, so why is the reverse ok

Only if someone is banning this movie from somewhere.

and people complain about them pressuring churches

Anyone can pressure anyone for anything. There's a difference between social pressure and a legal ban.

so why is the reverse ok

Anyone who doesn't care for nativity scenes is free to boycot them :2wave:

And anyone who is pissed about a boycott is free to bitch about it online (like I am). I don't see anything wrong with that. :2wave:

I guess they had stronger feelings about it then you do.
They actually delayed it though their boycott, because it didn't gain the revenue in the US that they expected. So New Line is unsure whether or not their studio will release the sequels.

What do you mean by "wrong". You mean illegal? Obvious it's not illegal to boycott something.

Hmm well that's their business decision to make.

Well, I can see the implied controversy in the OP... like, how dare those Catholics try and influence things this way, but New Line was not coerced against its will. At the end of the day they made a business decision based on the information available to them. I wouldn't even say that their choices were limited. They could have released it anyway.

Many movie studios postpone releases for fiscal reasons, this is just one of them.

I wonder what that nice man Mel Gibson thinks about this:lol:

The league should tearing new line a new one for butchering the the ending. Thy ruined the most crucial part of the whole damn book.

I loved those books, but I wasn't very impressed with the first movie. I'm not sure I'd go see the second one regardless.

If a company wants to release a film with anti-religious tones tones in it or alleged anti-religious tones in it then that is the business of the movie company. The catholic church should be free to boycott all they want, or if the movie violates some catholic rules then they are free to deny communion to those who make or watch the film just like that politician who voted for abortion laws. However if they are filing frivolous lawsuits then a judge with some common sense should tell the catholic church to **** off and make the catholic church reimburse the movie company for their lawyer fees.

I didn't know they were making a sequel, I haven't heard anything about it. The books are good, the movie was decent (I would say no where near as awesome as the book). But Golden Compass got huge protests and I haven't heard a single thing about the sequel coming out in the least and can find no information on it. It's too bad because the trilogy is good. Real good.

If ya like fantasy sort of stuff like Narnia or Potter, things like that, read the trilogy as it's definitely good.

I absolutely cannot stand Bill Donohue. He's an angry, bitter man. Every time he shows up on a news show, I have to turn it off, he makes my blood pressure rise.

That said, judging movies and their suitability for viewing is old hat for the Catholic Church. They've been doing it probably since the first movie came out. I bet they judged books before that. And radio programs. When I was a kid, I was not allowed to go to any movie until my mom looked it up in 'The Long Island Catholic" first. The feared 'C' rating showed up wayyyy too often. (I think it was 'c' for 'condemned'.)

I recall the fuss about the "Exorcist" (which turned out to be fairly crap) wading knee deep through the nutters at the cinema entrance, pleading with us not to go in, and handing out emergency phone numbers to call if we felt possessed later..... That was the fun part!

Agreed. Who cares.

And this is 8 years of Catholic school talking.

Never read the book. The 1st film was a little lame though.
