UPDATE 2-Venezuela begins shutdown of 34 radio stations | Markets | Bonds News | Reuters

CARACAS, Aug 1 (Reuters) - More than a dozen of 34 radio stations ordered shut by the Venezuelan government went off the air on Saturday, part of President Hugo Chavez's drive to extend his socialist revolution to the media.

The association of radio broadcasters said 13 stations had stopped transmitting, following an announcement Friday night by government broadcasting watchdog Conatel that 34 radio outlets would be closed because they failed to comply with regulations.
Chavez continues down the road of oppression. Wonder what Dear Leader will have to say about his pal doing away with freedom of speech for Venezuelans?

Say what you want but this man wastes no time in getting control of everything

Edit: Oh right Obama. He won't do anything.

And this is the guy who's backing Zelaya's attempt to do likewise in Honduras.

We are shocked about the support?
Like two peas in a pod.

Not shocked. Just don't like what's going on down south.

I don't think anyone would but there is nothing that be done short of invading and overthrowing someone. It falls on the citizens to act at their liberties being taken and not even slowly.

Its quite interesting what's going on.

Chavez is taking the dominance from private hands with corrupt influences and giving it to Community Radio, who by law cannot have directors who are party members, the military or private mass media.

They must also receive most of their programming from the community rather than from themselves.

It was community radio that saved the country from takeover by the business elite and the military in 2002.

Few would know that VZ has many indigenous people who seek their own voice on the airwaves. Have the private hands provided this? Nope, Community radio has however - how important is that to you?

Brace yourselves for a tiny history lesson. I is a historical fact that when a coup takes place or a "dictator" seizes power one on the first things they do is take over media to limit or eliminate as much opposition as possible. (end of Lesson).
Chavez is simply following the play book of other Leftist Dictators. What people in this country should be looking at are the parallels between Chavez's Presidency's goal and deeds and those of another what to be "Dictator in Chief".
Chavez has moved to Nationalize, the chemicals industry, the cement industry, the oil industry, the iron and steel industry, and threatened to nationalize the milk production, the Bank of Venezuela. Need I go on?
now what other country sees it Government involved in the take over of private industries.
Let's see, Banking. CHECK, Auto Industry, CHECK, Stock Market, Underway with wage controls on CEOs etc., Insurance industry, On it's way with the creation of a Government controlled system, Food industry, Take over in it's beginning stages with clamp downs on what you can eat and taxing foods determined by the Government that you should eat less of because you are not smart enough to decide on you own, Media, this is a grey area in some respects because wide areas have given into being Dictated to over what to do and when, but Talk Radio is a disruptive force that will be dealt with as power is further seized by implementation of the so-called fairness doctrine. No we have been assured by Der Fuhrer in Chief that he opposes this ever being reinstated, and we all know that if he says it it's gospel. But then only to his blind disciples.
Chavez's classic following of the Dictator play book it truly no surprise nor is his or his sole mates in as much as they are both pushing for the return of the legally ousted other want to be Dictator in Honduras.
Any guesses who fit to a T this mold?

Hmmm. If he's following some dictators playbook he's pretty slow at reading it. The dictators youre thinking of all eliminated the media in short order. This isnt the case here by any means.

I agree with you. If they don't get there acts together, and continue on the road to Dictatorship and Tyranny, well, expect South America to plunge into military and cartel violence with the US. It'll soon start looking like the ME, i can guarantee you that.
