The University of Maryland announced it will postpone indefinitely an upcoming screening of “American Sniper” after Muslim students protested – calling the film Islamophobic, racist and nationalistic.
“American Sniper only perpetuates the spread of Islamophobia and is offensive to many Muslims around the world for good reason,” read a petition launched by the university’s Muslim Students Association. “This movie dehumanizes Muslim individuals, promotes the idea of senseless mass murder, and portrays negative and inaccurate stereotypes.”
how bizarre reasoning is this that shutting down a movie showing is exercising freedom of speech? :shock:We ask that you exercise your freedom of speech to help us create a safer campus environment
The University had the freedom to chose to screen this film. They chose not to. That isn't an attack on free speech, that is an example of it.
From what I understand it was not the university but Student Entertainment Events (SEE), which appears to me to be a student organization so they can do whatever the hell they want as a private organization.
No, they chose to show it. Then they pulled it out of fear.
Based on complaints to the university. I'd bet they were told not to show it.
This doesn't help perception of Muslims at all. It only reinforces it.
University of Maryland cancels
Freedom of speech is a one-way street these days.
And this country has lost its spine.

Do you really not understand what freedom of speech is?

 I think cancelling a film for the stated reason is stupid; however, the university has the right to do so if it wishes. It wished to do so.
They chose to show it, and then chose to not, to prevent a negative backlash. That's free speech. They weren't forced to not show it. They chose to.

so the movie was scheduled
"some" students protested
now it isnt scheduled
do we now kowtow to every ethnicity, every race, every religion, as to what may or may not rankle their feathers
those students had the ability to not attend, and to not watch the film
what about the ones that wanted to see it
do they "count"
The group showing the film did "kowtow". What you don't seem to understand is that it chose to "kowtow". If it wanted it could have chosen to show the film anyway. It had a choice. It had the freedom to decide whether or not to show the film. That's freedom of speech. Nobody forced the group to not show the film.
A petition doesn't force the group to do that. The petition has no legal authority; it doesn't have any authority at all. It is simply the free speech of those opposed to the film.
What you're whining about is that those who were opposed to the film expressed their opinion - exercised their right to free speech - and those who were showing the film were actually empathetic and respectful and took into consideration the opinion of those opposed to it, and freely decided on what they wanted to do. You're the one that is opposed to freedom of speech here.
no....
i do understand it was their choice to show, or not to show
my question....do we kowtow every time someone's feathers get ruffled
are we so worried about being politically correct and not pissing anyone off
where do we draw the line is my question?
or is every petition granted....
and i am not opposed to freedom of speech......
i wore a uniform so that you and everyone else could speak freely
i may not always agree with what you say, but i will never say you dont have the right to voice it
