A new program at the University of Colorado is spreading racist language on campus -- on purpose. The goal is to make it disappear.
This guy >>>> Assistant Vice Chancellor Bronson Hilliard - thunked this one up.
Then in my opinion he made a real mistake.
The headline is inaccurate. They are not "fighting racism with racism". They are "fighting racism by encouraging people to report acts of racism"
I agree, but how they are going about this is problematic. What they are trying to do is put in everyone's face what others have done in hopes more report it and it sparks "discussion." The backlash is unsurprising, as it missed the real point.
Bigotry is learned, it can be replaced with tolerance. Something that is also learned, even experienced. It seems this "discussion" effort missed that.
While I do question the effectiveness of this particular effort, research has shown that one of the most effective ways to convince people to not engage in certain specific behaviors is to demonstrate that those behaviors are socially unacceptable. If this program does convince some people that acts of racist behavior are socially unacceptable, it should have an effect.
From the title I thought this was about affirmative action.
That's the only way liberals know of to fight racism. By the govt-mandated persecution of white people.
This kind of confrontational approach can work when done right, but without the proper context the point is lost and just comes across as crass. It's like a joke without the setup.
I think this is a far more clever confrontational approach that makes its point in a far more poignant way:

What?? That's totally untrue. The headline is inaccurate. They are not "fighting racism with racism". They are "fighting racism by encouraging people to report acts of racism"
See too the posters/fliers they're distributing.BOULDER, Colo. -- A new program at the University of Colorado is spreading racist language on campus -- on purpose. The goal is to make it disappear.
"We want students to be uncomfortable," said senior Judewon Kebede, who helped create signs posted on campus attacking people on race, religion and sexual identity.
One reads: "Your mom must be the janitor 'cause that's the only job for dirty Mexicans." Another assumes an Arab student must be a suicide bomber.
Normally, I might jump at the opportunity to correct a "news agency" like CBS News - but in this case, their report is spot on.The 500 signs are intentionally offensive and based on real campus incidents. They're approved and paid for by the university, where 21 percent of the student population is minority.
"People need to see the ugliness of it and confront it directly before we can change," said Assistant Vice Chancellor Bronson Hilliard.
i.e. "commit reprehensible acts, to show people reprehensible acts are reprehensible, so people who might commit reprehensible acts won't act reprehensibly and... commit reprehensible acts."That's the only way liberals know of to fight racism. By the govt-mandated persecution of white people.
What?? That's totally untrue.
Moreover, nowhere in that article does the phrase you've highlighted ("fighting racism by encouraging people to report acts of racism") even exist.
The first 3 sentences in the article:
See too the posters/fliers they're distributing.
Then read the rationale the vice chancellor gave:

University of Colorado tries to fight racism with racism - CBS News
Fighting racism with racism is an interesting innovation in the sphere of political technologies. I believe it is not working though. It is mentioned in the article they want students to feel uncomfortable. Those who already despise racism will feel embarrassed and uncomfortable, there is no doubt. Racially prejudiced students won't. Simply because the latter feel this way and there is nothing new to them. The point of anti-racism initiatives is not to make tolerant people feel uncomfortable. It is to make racists feel uncomfortable and we don't see it here.

Nooo, nooo, nooo. Not going to dodge your error on this one.Well, if a news article says so, it must be true!!!
Or, you could read it (as you should have before asserting what you did) - it says "Your mom must be the janitor, 'cause that's the only job for dirty Mexicans." It then says "Be Boulder, report it."Or, you could read the poster (there's a pic of one) and see what it says for yourself instead of letting CBS do your thinking for you
Nooo, nooo, nooo. Not going to dodge your error on this one.
You asserted the headline is wrong. If you doubt it - see your quote above.
You also asserted the action is about "fighting racism by encouraging people to report acts of racism." You even couched the latter in quotes, as if that phrase was somewhere in the article. It isn't. You fabricated that, admit it.
Or, you could read it (as you should have before asserting what you did) - it says "Your mom must be the janitor, 'cause that's the only job for dirty Mexicans." It then says "Be Boulder, report it."
Now admit it, you were wrong.
I'll wait....
Give it up already. As you note, the request to report acts of racism is explicitly stated on the poster. Encouraging people to report racist acts is the purpose of the posters. The posters are not racist in any way.
It is nonsense to claim that describing an act of racism is racist.
