A top official of Operation Warp Speed floated a new idea on Sunday for stretching the limited number of coronavirus vaccine doses in the United States: Halving the dose of each shot of Moderna’s vaccine to potentially double the number of people who could receive it.

Data from Moderna’s clinical trials demonstrated that people between the ages of 18 and 55 who received two 50-microgram doses showed an “identical immune response” to the standard of two 100-microgram doses, said the official, Dr. Moncef Slaoui.

Dr. Slaoui said that Operation Warp Speed was in discussions with the Food and Drug Administration and the pharmaceutical company Moderna over implementing the half-dose regimen. Moderna did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

Now you know for certain that the vaccine distribution is not going well. They want to ration the vaccine that hasn't even arrived yet.

Saw this earlier, and I must admit it is ominous.

Good idea if it's just as effective. They probably didn't have time to cross all the T's and dot all the I's in testing because the priority was to get a vaccine out that works with a minimum of side effects.

Can I have your left over half? LOL

Why would they change their half-assed approach, now?

If true, do it.

Does that mean one full shot without the follow-up shot is also as effective for this group?

No, it's not. And there are millions of doses of vaccines still sitting in freezers across the country. The fact that this is even debated in the current situation is absurd.

It’s been difficult with the holidays and the Covid caseloads to get it going, plus now you have to allow observation time for side effects. It’s not “Army style”, where you go through single file, bam, bam, bam. As I understand it at our Dignity Health network it’s more “individual treatment”, one snowflake patient at a time. I suspect they are spoiling as much as they use. And the press seems also less interested now that Trump is setting in the sunset.

The prioritization of who should receive the vaccine vs. first come first serve was a bad, politically pandering idea.

There are millions of doses sitting in freezers, going bad, because the pandering political assholes will only let certain people get vaccinated.

it's an imperfect system, for sure. It'll get better soon, hopefully.

I saw a report on the local news that calif has about 2/3rd of their vaccine allocation still in storage. Also, they are going to let dentists give the vaccine, too.

Ido question giving so many people a relatively untested vaccine to people at low risk of dying.

A system so inefficiant that vaccine doses are allowed to go bad, because they aren't used quickly enough, isn't "imperfect". It's a goddamn cluster****.

It's worse than that. Over 75% of California's allocated doses have not been administered.

Doesn't sound smart.
