Trump Unpopular Worldwide, American Image Suffers | Pew Research Center

Although he has only been in office a few months, Donald Trump’s presidency has had a major impact on how the world sees the United States. Trump and many of his key policies are broadly unpopular around the globe, and ratings for the U.S. have declined steeply in many nations. According to a new Pew Research Center survey spanning 37 nations, a median of just 22% has confidence in Trump to do the right thing when it comes to international affairs. This stands in contrast to the final years of Barack Obama’s presidency, when a median of 64% expressed confidence in Trump’s predecessor to direct America’s role in the world.

How far we've fallen. Objective data showing Trump is an national embarrassment. I'm not celebrating this - I actually care about our standing in the world.

It's going to take future administrations decades to repair the damage Trump is causing to our international relations. The thought of what more he can do scares the **** out of me and it should scare the **** out of everybody.

Trump was elected to represent Pittsburghj not Pakistan. Topeka not Trinidad. Germantown not Germany. If the people in foreign countries don't like Trump then they don't have to vote for him. :)

What a small-minded narrow-minded post

Rather sad how the Trumpites on this forum have constantly ranted about the ways in which the "secret Muslim Kenyan" had ruined America's reputation around the world and how a strong man like Trump would "Make America Great Again". Instead we have other nations stepping up on the podium to the place once occupied by an America that allies could rely upon. We have become that unlikeable neighbour who refuses to help neighbourhood cleanups.

The 4 most brutal numbers in that poll showing the world hates Trump

1. The world distrusts Trump more than even Vladimir Putin

Plenty of folks have pointed to the finding that Russia is one of the few countries that actually likes Trump — a 53 percent majority there has confidence in Trump to do the right thing on the world stage — but another Putin-related finding is even more telling. According to the poll, significantly more of the people surveyed in those 37 countries distrust Trump than distrust Putin.

2. In each of allied countries, 9 out of 10 view Trump as "arrogant," 7 in 10 as "dangerous"

Perhaps the most remarkable finding on that front is that about 9 out of 10 people in many of these countries describe Trump as “arrogant,” and about 7 in 10 in many of them label him “dangerous.” In each of Canada, Mexico, Spain, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Britain and Australia, at least 89 percent describe Trump as arrogant, while at least 69 percent describe him as dangerous. Many of these countries, again, are chief allies and leaders of the developed world.

3. Even nationalists don't love Trump

One of the biggest narratives in Europe recently has been whether the strain of populism and nationalism that Trump and Brexit embodied would catch on in other countries. Signals are mixed on that front. But the agendas of these nationalist movements certainly mirror Trump's, as The Washington Post's Ishaan Tharoor has written. And yet the Pew study actually suggests that those right-wing populists in Europe aren't even on the Trump Train.

4. Trump's reputation is already worse than George W. Bush's -- at the depths of his presidency

By the end of George W. Bush's presidency, disapproval of the Iraq War had sullied the United States's reputation in Europe and across the world. And yet even at the beginning of his presidency, Trump is already in marginally worse shape than Bush ever was — before any international crises.

Trump and Bush.webp

While bush* regularly embarrassed the nation with his malapropisms, his policies and behaviors do not begin to approach the train wreck that Trump has caused in our international standing. With his policies and inane tweets (like immigration EOs, insulting NATO, the EU, and NAFTA, promising to lay a 35% tariff on China and then backing off, not responding to Russian interference in elections, etc) Trump has taught our allies that we can not be trusted and our enemies that we can be played.

This nonsense again ?

Right, our image suffers because Trump refused to comply with a Obama erra, non-binding accord that nails the American economy and transfers American wealth while giving our Global competitors a huge advantage over us

We can only be a " world leader " if we keep in place a agenda that led to staggering Democrat losses over the last 6 years and implement his job killing climate change initaives.

Sounds like the" rest of the world " has something in common with the Left in America. They need to get over it, Hillary lost

Can we please appreciate the fact that Russia is one of the two nations that seemingly like the POTUS?

On a serious note, it is a little disheartening to see these numbers. Nevertheless, you can't ignore the fact that many of these countries are fairly to very left-wing.

The question is, what if anything can we as a nation can do?

inb4 people start screeching impeachment.

Your description of the Paris Accord couldn't be more small narrow-minded and provincial. There is nothing more Central to the defense of our country than American leadership in the world

Relationships with other countries are about one thing and one thing only and that's our own defense it isn't about left-wing or right-wing

There has been FAR more than just Trumps actions with the Paris Accord that has left the world speechless. His antics during the campaign were frequent sights on Sky news. His tweets are accessible the world over, and make Americans look like whiny bitches. Presidents should act presidential, a calm and cool persona that does not get rattled when someone says something mean about them.
Our image to the rest of the world is extremely important in our ever increasing globalization society. Trump's agenda seems to be to turn us into a paranoid North Koreanesque Isolationist state rather than the democratic leaders of the free world.

1: You forgot trade, trade is a big part of our relationship with other countries

2: The cited statistics are dealing with a comparison between Trump and Obama. You are free to disagree, but I would definitely say that their policies and ideals would greatly effect how foreigners see us, dependent on those peoples own ideologies.

3: EVERYTHING is about the political spectrum, for actions are based off where you stand on the grand stage. A right winger won't push to seize the means of production, and a left-winger won't advocate for unrestricted capitalism!

The rest of the world needs to get over it, really.

He's a New York real estate mogul, not a polished Politician or a Statesman or Washington elitist. That was part of his appeal whether you want to accept or not

Turns out Americans are getting sick of the demagoguery, lies and broken promises that theyve been fed for years from both sides of the isle.

Washington only has itself to blame as does Hillary Clinton for Trumps Presidency, and hard working American families who are struggling with massive deductibles and premium hikes, stagnant wages or little to no job opportunities for their the kids who have to return home after college with a massive new debt and no job prospects could really care less what the rest of the world thinks of them or their President.

The rest of the world can get bent if they think American leadership equates to this Nation submiting to non-binding accords that strip wealth and jobs away from this Nation
They can especially get get bent if they equate American leadership to Americans voters electing a Democrat every 4 years

Saying I forgot about trade is presumptuous. The US economy is about 18 trillion dollars. Trade is about 2 trillion. In spite of all the hoopla about trade it's not a big deal.

But that's exactly what we got from Trump. The man says whatever he thinks will aid him in the moment with no thought about the future. So he is on a daily basis putting his foot in his mouth, but keeps chugging forward.

We, the American people do have ourselves to blame for this mess, We voted for the politicians that got us in the mess we are in today. We believe their lies and do not hold them accountable with our votes when those lies bite us in the ass. We are being blinded by hyper-partisanship to say that everything is now black and white. Congress is being made to look like an eternal struggle for Good vs Evil. The fact you can choose to vote straight ticket on an election ballot highlights the problems we face. No one learns about a candidate and their history, only the letter next to their names matter anymore.

Alienating ourselves from the rest of the world will decreases our political influence. Will decreases of favorable deals we can get (Look at the cost of imports in US compared to many other places in the world and you can see some of the perks of being American). Lose that influence, those deals, will make it a more uphill climb some lower income families have to make.

Leadership yes. kowtowing no.

Oh ****ing bull****. If Euro-weenies, et al don't like us, we're doing something right. We don't want to be Socialist scum like Europe, libs. Live it, learn it, love it. ;)

Yep, xenophobic separatists are part of Trump's base. Regardless of what you think, our standing and credibility in the world matters. If there ever is a crisis and we need other nation's assistance or support, we'll have zero credibility.

Didn't our opinion worldwide fall under bush as well, this leads me to believe our standing worldwide has little to do with the actions of the president to the american people but rather how many kickbacks and special deals he gives to the countries voting on opinion.

The two examples israel and russia, america has backed israel, and trump shown more supportive than his predecessor, and with russia the sentiment waffles back and forth, but their people seem to think trump can atleast nornmalize relations with their country. The rest of the countries however probably see their gravy train running out, like germany being called out over not spending their gdp worth on defense, or the paris climate accord which the us would have fronted most the cost.

It's a sad state of affairs that the leader of the free world is looked down upon so harshly.

It took us about 8 years, but we were just about to dig out of the multiple catastrophes of the Bush Jr administration: financially, science research-wise, climate change, social issues, financially,...and now this happens. It's like a car accident victim just barely starting to recover from major trauma in the ICU, and getting yanked out of the hospital and being planted in the middle of a busy freeway.

Of course, the last thing foreigners would be concerned with is "our standing" when they show up at the front door of the White House, hat in hand, wanting America to shell out taxpayer's money for whatever, or perhaps shed some blood in their defense.
