U.S. Bald Eagles Comeback Diminished By Lead Poisoning From Bullets

I don't think they're going to be endangered because of it, but it's still a shame. The strategy of 'whatabout electric wires' is the same one used in gun control arguments, 'whatabout cars?' We can't eliminate electric wires, obviously, or the wind turbines we use to generate it, but we can use copper bullets.

People with guns once again looking pretty ugly.
Umm so you know all about copper bullets Mary?

Please explain.

If you want to see Bald Eagles, come on up to BC (make sure that you are vaccinated and don't bring your guns). We have tons of them up here.

In fact, it might even be possible to arrange for you to take one back to the US with you (however, you will have to agree to take 1,000 Canada Geese as well).
Well I go up to bc and take my guns.
And take geese back too!!
Love Canada.

But you can only bring them in if you have permission - not "as of right".

Please feel free to take all the Canada Geese you can pack into your vehicle.

Admittedly they taste better than Bald Eagle, but they don't taste as good as Snowy Owl.

A bit topic adjacent, but why is hunting considered an acceptable reason to need a gun? It's 2022. If you're such a psycho you need to kill animals personally, use your hands. What is the argument for having to have that advantage?

What the...?

People don't "need to kill animals" because they're psychos. They kill animals for food. And i'd like to see you try to catch and kill a deer with your bare hands.

Nope. I was wrong about sinkers. Small ones in some states have been outlawed because they're killing loons. Almost all the lead poisoning in eagles comes in the winter when they're eating off carcasses and guts left behind by hunters. Bullet fragments. A lead fragment the size of a grain of rice will kill an eagle.
This is true the one question I have to ask is has anybody looked into what a new kind of bullet would be made of and will that material be harmful to them, other Birds or other animals
if they make them out of steel is the steel going to kill some other Bird or other animal
We have been making Bullets out of lead for hundreds of years and this probably has been happening for that long nobody will know for sure
I just want to say if your going to replace lead with something else make sure it isn't as harmful or more harmful then lead is
have a nice evening

Sure. I am not a Canadian citizen.
Ironically though..and I chuckle because I saw so many more guns in Canada than I did in the us and I live in red gun toting state.
Every vehicle had one..rv. I went in people's houses and there they were in the corner or next to the door in a rack..
And the doors were never locked.
Canada geese are great but I think I like snow geese from Canada more.
So fat that they dribble fat from pellet holes or burst when they hit the ground.

What is wrong with using ammunition that doesn't have lead in it?

Obama banded it but trump's interior secretary ryan zinke overturned it. So our bald eagles are dying from lead poisoning.

I hope that Biden does something about this.

Because using poisonous lead "owns the libbies".

Anything that is environmentally conscious in the least is librull, and bad and therefore to be avoided. Even if it literally kills us.

We have grocery stores so, no, no one needs to personally kill animals for food.

Also, I am pretty sure my uncles and cousins are all comfortably above six figures per year. Are you saying they post pictures of the turkey or deer they shot because they are in need of food?

I don't think that we should wait until they are endangered before we do something about it.

I think that there is no reason to look the other way on this.

This is preventable.

One bald eagle dead from this is one too many.

I don't see any excuse for this beyond selfishness and total disregard for our national bird.

I know. I live just 90 minutes south.

I've gone up there and photographed the bald eagles.

They are everywhere. I had never seen so many of them in one place in the wild before.

We don't have populations of bald eagles here like you do in Canada.

It's sad that we have to go to another nation to see America's national bird.

Because it is a lawful and regulated activity.

Those birds are there because It's a garbage dump. They're scavengers.
I used to leave the heart in the bush in the gutpile. The head too so presumably the bullet was there, I never looked. Where I live there's so much hunting activity it sometimes sounds like the deer are shooting back, and there's lots of eagles too. Lots. I nearly rear-ended one once.
Point is, I can't believe that lead poisoning from bullets in gut piles is a threat to eagle populations. If there's a population decline it's probably driven by much worse threats. This is an anti-hunting agenda at work.

I guess the biggest advantage of lead bullets are that they are cheaper to make, and that savings is passed onto the consumer. Plus, gun owners say they are the ideal bullet.

What does it say?

Lots of stuff about how birds in the US get lead poisoning from our fabulous gun nuts.
Not just birds, lots of stuff. Its well known fact.
The fact that you "do not believe its a problem" really isnt relevant.

Copper jacketed bullets aren't as dense as lead, and therefore do not have better ballistics than lead. Lead also costs less and is much easier on the life of the barrel than jacketed rounds are. I prefer lead, and I stocked up on lead before my state (California) banned all the lead bullets here.
You're love of lead explains a lot.

You are correct. Bald eagles are no longer endangered. Its what the bald eagle symbolizes, American democracy, that is endangered.
Thank to liberals and progressives, you are correct.

PS - "hindering" does not mean one dead eagle. Don't be disingenuous, which is a form of lying.
Hindering is subjective, so I wasn't being disingenuous, and I certainly wasn't lying. All species at some level are "hindered" by something. Could be by other animal, could be by weather, could be due to the loss of natural spaces due to human encroachment, which actually has a much larger effect on bald eagles as they lose more of their hunting grounds. Bottom line: they aren't endangered, so no need to overreact.

BTW, I am thankful to the rancher who "hindered" the cow which became by steak dinner tonight.... LOL.

Or, hunters could be widely notified that lead shot remnants are killing eagles and asked to take any remains that they field dress with them, so as to make sure eagles aren’t ingesting lead?

Post a sign/notice about areas: Bald Eagles in this region, please take any remains from field dressing with you.

The vast majority of hunters would comply. Problem solved.

Now that does surprise me considering that, in the US there are around 1.2 guns per person and in Canada there are around 34.7.

The rate of gun ownership in Canada is approximately 58,022 per million which is around 5.8%. The rate in the US is around 44%.
And the doors were never locked.
Because people in a law abiding country don't really need to lock their doors?

Anyhow, please feel free to visit. Don't forget to leave your money behind when you leave.
