U.S.A is not America

We're not. They're trying to define what we call ourselves. And how many people define themselves by the continent they come from? .

We define other countries by their continent. Europeans, Asians, Australians, and Africans come to mind. I would say most of all Australians get defined by their continent.

Your North Americans than, whatever.

I'm particularly tired of all those Russians who don't call themselves asian.

Why the hell has that been thanked so many times for....check the map, a chuck of it (and i mean a very large chunk of it) is European. So i guess there sick of telling people it really depends what part of Russia your from (y)

When speaking generally, yes.
Who refers to Egyptians, when speaking specifically about Egyptians, as Africans?

And, of course, I have to wonder:
Doesnt that make black people "African-North American"?

In the end, I don't see why people bitch about this for real. America is America, the vast majority of the world uses America to mean United States of America. Plus, America is our word (in the sense of history wherein America started as colonies for Europe); it's European after that explorer Amerigo Vespucci. It's time to get over it.

And North and South America are two different continents for anyone who is confused about that. South America broke off first, it sits on it's own continental shelf. Central America wasn't initially there, it was born from volcanoes originally and spread into a land bridge between the two continents.

I prefer to be called "those people from that one country below Canada" thank you very much.

I prefer to say ''that country attached to Mexico'' :p

Boy i sure do know how to wind up Americans, works with my gf all the time ;]

:rofl

That brings up a good point how Africans are just generalized as African-American but the ones with European ancestry get their country to define them- Irish-American, Italian-American. That should tell you right there if you have to generalize yourself, you are probably just an American at this point.

If South Africa was called something else that didnt include "Africa" in it, do you reckon they'd refer to it as a seperate country from the continent (like they do with the Egyptians and Dubai).

Obama is an African-American.
Oprah is black.

Why arent South African whites that move here considered African-Americans?

I didnt know that. Mind you something occured to me yesterday. I was watching this film with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, and they had Jamie Foxx on CCTV doing something outside a club and then the police officers described him as "tall, glasses, African - American". He could have been carribean :P
So really i think it just falls back down to the black/white divide. Whitey's are accepted into society while clearly Africans have to try harder to be fully accepted as "Americans". Here in Briton for example, we dont coin the term "African Brit" when describing a black Brit. That terms doesnt exist.
There either British (be it black or white), or there not Brits altogether.

On government documents when it asks about race what does it say?

British, according to Passport documents etc. Maybe some go as far as to say Black Brit, i haven't seen it, again the term African is never coined in any context.

Okay I was just curious.

Bullies.

Americans have been calling themsleves Americans for centuries, and have absolutely no reason to change that.
I think we can call ourselves Americans if we want to but not because we can kick someone's ass. That's the way you bullies view life, the biggest stick makes the rules.

South Americans Are South Americans. Mexicans are Mexicans. Canadians are Canadians & Americans are Americans. Get over it. We aren't going anywhere & will not forget those that shame us.
