Simple holiday. On November 11th we take a day to remember the sacrifices of our Veterans. They endured hell most can’t imagine. I’ve said before, my war was the easy one. But we didn’t know that going in. We had to assume it would be bloody and hard fought.

Now Trump wants to rename it to Victory in World War One day.

You see, we don’t need to think of the Veterans and their sacrifice. We need to celebrate the victory. Sure the Veterans carry baggage around for life, those who survive. But hey, that isn’t important. The important part is the victory.

Trump wants this because he hasn’t had any victories. He couldn’t win at Go Fish without cheating.

On Memorial Day I think of the troops we’ve lost. On Veterans Day I think of those who survived and were maimed or so stressed by Combat they were never whole again. By focusing on the victories, aren’t we just sweeping those under the rug who served but didn’t have a victory? Korea, Vietnam, Beirut, Afghanistan, and many other places where young men fought and died for something.

Is there anything in history or the Country that Donald won’t get his Dick Prints on?

Ditto. (y) Memorial Day is a day to honor and remember those who died in combat/battle/service.
On Veterans Day I think of those who survived and were maimed or so stressed by Combat they were never whole again.
On Veteran's Day, I think of ALL the men and women who served - including those who were not 'maimed or so stressed by Combat they were never whole again.'

ALL veterans should be remembered on Veterans Day - regardless if they were maimed or not. (in my opinion).

Shouldn't you be upset it's called Veterans Day and not Maimed Veterans Day then?

As for myself, I always feel uneasy when someone says thanks for your service. I have read and heard about those who had it infinitely harder than I did. I don’t feel my own service is anything equal to theirs.

I especially feel inadequate in comparing myself to those who were maimed, or whose minds never recovered fully. Those who spent years in combat. Those who endured years of stress.

My personal goal in Veterans Day is to honor those who gave so much more than me, and lived to tell the tale. I did nine years in the Army, and got my honorable. I was Not a great soldier, but I made Sergeant before I left Fort Bragg so I was above average.

I knew a man who was a Marine who stormed the beach at Iwo Jima. He was wounded there and spent the rest of his life with partial paralysis of his face from nerve damage from shrapnel. I still hold that man, long ago deceased, in great esteem. Just as I hold the others in the wars in similar esteem.

With covid, the evil mofo thought thousands of Americans dying a day was a victory.......

......but yeah, not surprised at all that he wants to pretend to be making something great........

......as if he would care a bit if every one of our lives were at stake.

Never forget, (at the end of his last reign of terror) he got them (police and military) to hurt each other in his honor......

.......tis interesting though yeah, how he has convinced his followers that being captured fighting for him (not America) is what a real hero looks like nowadays.

How very Russian of Trump.

Why does Russia celebrate Victory Day on May 9, and what does it mean for Putin?

ATW!

I was sure that The Onion was the source, when I was a by, 11NOV was Armistice Day! Putin is his idol!

Don’t sell yourself short. You joined not knowing if your job was going to turn out to be one of the “easy” ones or one of the “hard” ones. That’s why people thank you for your service. It’s about your commitment as much as it is about what you actually did.
Thank you!

So…you are ok with this?

Just making sure you are clearly on the record here.

Exactly.

I was an electron pusher. Flew off of carriers and have "combat flight time" from Desert Storm/Shield as our mission was reconnassiance and we did a lot of Scud Hunting (amongst other things).

I'm not the type of guy that carries my prior servcie on my sleeve. There is an internal sense of accomplishment and pride, that's good enough for me. When somenone thanks me for my service, I also feel "off" knowing that many have suffered way more than I for our service.

I try not to be a dick about it, but if the situation is appropriate, I suggest they reach out to a veterans organization and make a small donation instead. That I appreciate their wishes, but tangible help to veterans that struggle would be better.

I’m sad for Vietnam Veterans such as my FIL who never got a “thank you” when they were serving or came home.

And who were not a part of any “victory”

Pop served proudly and bravely - and his physical body has suffered the impacts of Agent Orange.

The man wears his Army Rangers hat as a badge of pride and honor and has really enjoyed being celebrated at luncheons, etc for Veterans at my son’s school.

It has been a fight to get him to accept VA benefits he is entitled to - because he, too, knows that even though he has disabilities related to his service - he also knows that there are those who have had it much worse. And never wanted to take any benefits, in case it meant someone who needed them more wouldn’t get them.

I’m so angry that a draft dodger has the audacity to shit on Veterans the way this POTUS does.

When I was growing up 11 Nov was known as Armistice Day. It marked the signing of an armistice ending WWI on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. It celebrated the end of WWI. Then in 1954 Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day to honor all who served. We do have a precedence for changing its name. The original intent was to mark the end of WWI. I’d rather the name remain the same, Veterans Day. But Veterans Day has basically become a meaningless holiday to most. Today businesses remain open, most people have to work unless they’re a government employee. Even kids have to go to school. Veterans Day is just another normal workday to most. Perhaps the local American Legion or VFW will have a small ceremony in some park, but that’s it. No day off work, no parades, basically no nothing. Nothing like the big holiday we had as a kid growing up. Perhaps that is understandable. Back then in the 1950’s every family had someone or knew of someone who served in WWII. We still basked in the glory of that victory. IKE was president, the general who led us to victory over Hitler and the NAZI’s. Now that is a long-ago forgotten event to most. The name change was to honor not only those who served in WWI, but also in WWII.

It won’t bother me if the name is changed, although I rather it not. But if the name of Veterans Day is to be change, change it not to Victory in World War One day, but back to its original name, Armistice Day. That was the original intent and reason for 11 Nov being a holiday in the first place.

Every school I know gets Veterans' Day off.

The precedence for changing the name to Veterans' Day holds meaning though, to honor people who are living, have served.

retail and service businesses stay open on almost all holidays now, with very few exceptions. The bigger issue is that we allow businesses to take advantage of workers by not giving them holidays off or paying them properly. It isn't because of some lack of caring about Veterans Day itself.

They don’t here. Unless one has to go to the bank or post office, one wouldn’t even know it’s a holiday. You don’t see that many sales promotions either, not compared to other holidays. But if the name is going to be changed, change it back to Armistice Day which it originally was. Not to Victory in World War One Day. Another holiday that has had its name changed was Washington’s Birthday which was changed to President’s day in 1971.

That seems like an issue mainly with that state. Even California requires it to be a day off, recognized as a holiday.

And that is another holiday that has had its name changed to be more inclusive, which is a good thing. Changing it to exclude people is an issue.

If you didn't vote for Trump, you DID help veterans.

PS Anyone else want to comment on the fact that he wants it to be Victory in World War One Day, but not Victory in World War Two Day or a day for any other war? Veterans' Day honors all veterans and makes us think of all vets of all US wars, including the biggest, WWII. But it's as if Trump doesn't want to remind us of any war but WWI and certainly not WWII, which was far more significant. Maybe because he doesn't think Hitler was the enemy.

I was going to call your date and then looked it up. It must have taken some time for the new name to take hold, because when I started school, 1958, it was still referred to as Armistice Day.
