Donald Trump tells Chris Matthews: Women deserve ‘some form of punishment’ for abortion

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said on Wednesday that women who had abortions should face “some form of punishment” if Republicans were successful in banning the practice.

During a town hall event that set to air on MSNBC Wednesday night, host Chris Matthews insisted that Trump could not dodge the question of how to enforce an abortion ban.

“Look, people in certain parts of the Republican Party, conservative Republicans, would say, ‘Yes, it should,’” Trump replied, according to a transcript obtained by Bloomberg. “I would say it’s a very serious problem and it’s a problem we have to decide on. Are you going to send them to jail?”

“There has to be some form of punishment,” he said.

“For the woman?” Matthews pressed.

“Yeah,” Trump replied, adding that the punishment would “have to be determined.”

I suppose the emotional scars that they will carry for life isn't enough punishment for Trump?

After the interview, the Trump campaign released a statement from the candidate saying: "This issue is unclear and should be put back into the states for determination. Like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions, which I have outlined numerous times."

It's pretty amazing, but not shocking, how terrible the man is at answering tough questions on the spot - particularly when he is forced to actually answer the question instead of turning the process around as he attempted to do several times during this interview.

He has never actually thought about any of these issues  which is why he cannot cogently defend or even stick to an idea.

Well he was a business man for so many years. The topic of abortion and what you think about it just never comes up for private citizens.

It's not like he's given interviews on this subject for years, or entertained running for President multiple times.

What is terrible is how the media and the anti-Trumpeteers twist what he says.

For instance:

When read with the bolded qualifier, it's a no duh!

His known position, that he is pro-choice with exceptions, is at odds with the republican platform. Taking that into account this statement simply says the party is going to have to finally decide where they are at on this issue. Are they going to send folks to jail over what can be a harrowing choice?

He's not advocating a "punishment", he's saying that if the party gets it's way, there will have to be a punishment involved.

He's already come out saying he doesn't hold with the party on this.

Of course, as Governor of California, Reagan signed into law the legalization of abortion, the biggest state to do so...but..of course people love to forget that...

Yea.. Trump literally just gets up there and gives a ****ty high school speech. Whatever pops into his egotistical brain of his he will blurt out, and then flip flop, and attempt to clarify later.

There's a reason he was called Clayfoot Reagan when he was governor.

The amazing thing is, his followers simply follow, regardless of what he says and does. I would not be suprised if he gets elected, he has made it this far.

Simpletons do things simply....

That should help Trump with the typical Bible Belt voter.

They weren't reasoned into their position. Why would they be reasoned out of it?

Well, sorta. Clarification often doesn't occur, because he says or does something else batty, and the news cycle just moves on to that.

In this very thread, we have one of his supporters claiming that Trump is pro-choice even though the article quotes him saying that he's pro-life

Trump will say whatever he has to on any given day, even if it is opposite of what he just said. And the rubes that still support him just love to be conned.

And wouldnt ya know, Trump is already walking back his claim that women should be punished for getting an abortion...

His literally flip flopping in less than a ****ing day. And his supporters will still back him :doh

Trumps actual position on 95% of the issues, not just abortion.

I get emotional when I lose 20 bucks. No idea what you think you just posted proves or has to do with the conversation.

Why would you? Bernie will provide.....

The point is pro abortionists cant have it both ways. So there can be no emotional scars from a simple medical procedure.

That crash I'm hearing overhead is the mere 38% approval rating of Trump by women crashing to the floor.

Ironic, since I'd bet money on the fact that Trump's prior trysts with babes resulted in unwanted pregnancies and abortions paid for and approved by Trump.

I think Trump is a joke, but on this issue, I don't see why there is a controversy.

I mean, if abortion is outlawed (like the GOP says they want), then OF COURSE there will have to be a punishment if a woman somehow obtains one or self-inflicts one.

I understand why just about no other republican candidate would say that, but they all must agree with it. As does anyone who holds the anti-abortion position. Right?

There is no such thing as a pro-abortionist. There are pro-choice, meaning that it is up to the individuals involved. If they decide against abortion, that is fine. That's because they are not pro-abortion, but are pro-choice.

There are, however, anti-abortionists. Which means that there is no right path except NO abortion. Meaning those people are anti-abortion.

Let's get our terminology right. Your extremist language doesn't fool anyone. It appears you know you can't win a logical or reasonable argument, so you resort to lying. But it doesn't fool anyone. It just makes the argument appear foolish.
