On that topic, it's helpful to look at other authoritarian takeovers of democracies to see what has happened and what they haven't been able to do. They have a very powerful propaganda machine that has taken over a third of Americans and they were nearly able to have a coup, after stealing the presidency in 2000.

But there are many things they haven't been able to do - such as a lot of physical intimidation, imagine if you speak out having the police arrest you; eliminating rivals, critics, and truthtellers. Imagine if people like Nancy Pelosi and Rachel Maddow were imprisoned, not only the direct effect but the chilling effect. And censorship - look what Putin just did in Russia ending all independent media. trump belongs in jail.

I'm actually surprised that Trump didn't try to invoke some provisions of the Patriot Act or related laws. His followers are so gullible that if he had claimed that Biden and a handful of key senators were involved in a terrorist plot and locked them up in GTMO, they would have cheered him on without a moment's hesitation. When that SOB in Ukraine refused to play ball with Trump and announce an "investigation" of Biden, I thought for sure that was where Trump would go next.

The hearing yesterday was scary in its implications. It seems that Trump either was so disconnected from reality that he couldn’t believe loyal advisors, or that he couldn’t stop himself from continuing the lie, hoping that something new would turn up. That he raised millions and didn’t spend it on challenging the results says something about him, and sadly, about some of his supporters.
