President Trump nixed issuing a statement that praised the heroism and life of Sen. John McCain, telling senior aides he preferred to issue a tweet before posting one Saturday night that did not include any kind words for the late Arizona Republican.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Chief of Staff John F. Kelly and other White House aides advocated for an official statement that gave the decorated Vietnam War POW plaudits for his military and Senate service and called him a “hero,” according to current and former White House aides, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive internal deliberations. The original statement was drafted before McCain died Saturday, and Sanders and others edited a final version this weekend that was ready for the president, the aides said.

But Trump told aides he wanted to post a brief tweet instead, and the statement praising McCain’s life was not released.

“My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!” Trump posted Saturday evening shortly after McCain’s death was announced.

Sanders declined to comment Sunday afternoon.

“It’s atrocious,” Mark Corallo, a former spokesman for Trump’s legal team and a longtime Republican strategist, said of Trump’s reaction to McCain’s death. “At a time like this, you would expect more of an American president when you’re talking about the passing of a true American hero.”

How petty and pathetically immature can a man of his age get? Trump is an embarrassment and can only dream of aspiring to being even just half the man McCain was.

It would be stupid for Trump to put his name, which would effectively become the only name, on a lauding statement of McCain. It would become a meme fest, and for the next couple days we'd get nothing but "what he said before - what he says now" pics. It's best if everyone in the Admin is free to do as they please and we don't put Trump's name on such a statement, as it would only become a distraction from McCain.

Let's say you're the boss and the office wants to put out a lavish statement about something you haven't agreed with. Do you say, "sure, I'll put my name at the top and look like a total hypocrite and ass"? No. Everyone does what they want independently.

He doesn't provide a statement, people will call it embarrasing and pathetic.

He gives a statement, people will call it embarrasing and pathetic.

Not sure why you believe Trump is obligated to do anything. He isn't.

I'm wondering if there are any veterans in this forum who are/were Trump supporters are now fed up with Trump's shameful actions, lack of actions, and disrespect Trump has repeatedly targeted at McCain.Even as he clearly was in his last weeks and days in this life.

It was only a matter of time before someone played the "veterans deserve special treatment" card.

McCain is just one person. He will be remembered based on how people choose to remember him.

Yeah I almost believe that your admiration of McCain is genuine and not contrived so you can take yet another cheap shot at Trump.

Giv n the horrible relationship between the two of them.
That was notably for the best. Anything else would have just been flake
And icing and pretty much bs.

The post was about how 'veterans' feel about 'Trump' disrespecting McCain..Not what the populace at large thinks about 'McCain.'Try to focus on what is being posted. Your red herring didn't play very well.

I don't understand how him staying out of it now, and not taking part in heartfelt overtures, is a bad thing. People are upset that he didn't put his name on a group statement that would have made him a huge hypocrite and ass.

It's awful how an embarrassing and pathetic, insecure, petty narcissist can't get any respect anymore!

What we sort of wish is we had a POTUS who could rise above their disagreements and put out a sincere statement honoring the man for his sacrifices fighting for the country and decades of service, however flawed. But we don't. And because we don't I actually am glad he didn't put out anything.

You're not posting anything meaningful; McCain being a veteran has zero relevance on how he should be treated/remembered.

That's your opinion.

I reject your notion on what a POTUS should do. The POTUS is a person just like everyone else and should be allowed to hold grudges like anyone else.

My question is pretty clear. It's addressing veteran's only, and how they feel about Trump's disdain and disrespect for a fellow veteran.

For some, politics transcends morals and decency. It's a shame how far we've fallen.

Trump hasnt shied away from that before

This was to be a 'White House' statement. I would think that a man McCain's stature and nearly life long service to his country and the office of the President demands better from him.

You know the drill A-Kid..Trump is so petty and thin-skinned,there is no bar set so low he can't slither beneath it.

No more bizarre than believing that the POTUS is an alien/deity/spirit/non-person/etc, which is something you apparently believe.

Once one resorts to trying and failing to read another's mind, said person loses all credibility and the argument...well done

I said the POTUS is a person; you found the statement amusing. A reasonable thinking person can only infer that you believe that the POTUS isn't a person.

If the POTUS isn't a person, what is he?

I don't know. How petty and immature can a newspaper get to think this is a story to print?
