People are making a bigger deal about Trump lowering the tariff to 80%

The amounts are set so high that they are more or less arbitrary. The only purpose for them is to freeze trade until a deal is reached.

Lowering them to 80% is symbolic and allows China to make a goodwill gesture while saving face. If they pass, I will not be surprised if Trump puts them back to 140% or even higher.

Agree with Trump or not, he is playing chicken with China. This is a game of who will blink first. The way the American media is attempting to sabotage the negotiation is shameful. If they succeed in causing Trump to fail, America fails with him. If the media does not like being called the enemy of the people (which they clearly dont) perhaps they should stop acting like they are.

What she said is absolutely the point. She is trying to undermine a negotiation between 2 world superpowers so she can score some cheap political points, that really are not that cheap. If Trump loses, so does America. The media better make up their mind who's side they are on because right now they are behaving like they want China to win. It's disgusting.

BUT Have they actually "been left behind" and "disrespected by the changes in the U.S." or have they simply been inundated with a constant barrage of being told they SHOULD feel that way; regardless if those changes are not unique to the U.S. but happening worldwide?

I think it’s a bit of both. I believe that many Reagan democrats voted against their economic interests (the same sector doing much the same in voting for Trump) but on social/cultural issues. And as you suggest, they have been told they should feel that way for over a generation. George Wallace appealed to some of the same folks for the same reason when he for president ran in the late 1960s. One phenomenon commented on at the time - if I remember those years correctly - was the number of blue collar whites who switched to anti-establishment Wallace after their favored candidate, Bobby Kennedy, who also had challenged the establishment, was murdered.
