Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from new tariffs

Okay, guys, you're missing the point.
This is not Trump’s doing. This is the work of the legal departments at Apple, Google, Tesla, and so on. It is actually a "new oligarchy" being institutionalized through tariff policy. The HTSUS codes that are exempt cover:
  • Smartphones, computers, components from Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft
  • Semiconductors, chips, GPUs from Nvidia, AMD, Intel
  • Communications equipment from Tesla, Amazon, SpaceX (satellite links)
Competitors are not covered by these codes. That means while the competition has to pay 145% in tariffs, Trump’s circle of multimillionaires doesn’t have to pay a damn thing.

Well, China has its own lawyers – and they’re significantly smarter than the Americans (obviously, they are still idiots, I mean, who the hell supports an idiot like Trump and if I can figure it out seconds after reading this thread, so can China...). We can expect measures that will stop this little "buddy deal" Trump is trying to pull off... To be continued.

My city is blessed with a decent selection of independent audiophile-level retailors.

But the one chain I did like was Pacific Stereo.

On another note, I wish there was an alternative chain to Guitar Center. Competition improves the breed.
Wow, Pacific Stereo was amazing. One of their longtime employees runs pacificstereo.net (and mostly runs tapeheads.net) focusing on vintage gear repair / restoration, and has done great work for me.

I used to like to occasionally get into a conversation/debate with you - but your new and constant "Donnie Boy" thing has given you a whole new look as a poster. I doubt you care but you know how it is - some posters are just better, more mature, and more willing to leave that childish stuff aside.

You worship and swoon over the most immature and childish name caller in the country, the king of third grade level name calling, the man who should be held to the highest standard.

Your hilariously passive aggressive, holier than thou, faux moral high ground attempts to shame are a fail, a major one at that.

I would certainly agree but I think you might be a bit challenged to find current agreement from the Canadians on this forum and also from many American leftists. China (pro-China), Walmart, and chaos are their new "narratives".
Recognizing the reality that no one wins a trade war is not a narrative, and it doesn't equate to support for China. Reality is a bit more complex than the Trump/anti-Trump dichotomy MAGA have been convinced into believing.

Could you share the codes?

More specifically, is your claim that (for example) iPhones are exempt but Samsung Galaxy devices are not?

aluminum steel, car manufacturing, chip manufacturing, AI (data centers), pharmaceuticals are all onshoring under Trump;
The China tariffs on the exemptions were simply not feasible
When?

If you think Trump can strike a deal with China that takes those things into consideration...not that he has shown he can...you can be damn sure Mark Carney can. Unless your intent is to do no trade with China your argument is shallow and specious because you are looking to make a deal too....

This started out as a trade war, but it has become a war. It's the start of another Cold War. It's unmistakable. Even if Trump thinks better of it and decides he doesn't need China to kowtow after all, there's no calling these economic missiles back home. China now knows the US is an existential threat to its future and that the US policy of wary cooperation is now outright containment and, ultimately, dominance by the US. From China's perspective, this must be answered, and China must not give in.

Exactly.

No matter what Trump now does to "make nice", the world will not forget and - behind closed doors - will not be planning "nice" back.

I did. The clowns are running the show. Trump is masturbating.

Leaders don't change their minds daily. Clowns do.

I do as well. Your prioritization of clowns running the government needs adjustment. Especially if you prioritize your account balance.

My hunch is that by next week, construction companies will be given an exception to using illegal labor.

The community here is going to be happy next month. Jacobs' festival grounds will open to country acts at the Drifters Festival.

That's four weeks from today and the property is still being built.

Most of those workers don't speak English. I know because I talked to them. Surely many are illegal. The owner is a Republican. Billionaire. Great guy, actually. He needs the construction company which needs the illegals. Trump will change his mind on construction crews by next week.

I hope your plans works out, whatever they may be. My whole community's plans are working out, thanks to a visionary Republican billionaire, who needs illegals.

Republicans need illegals. The stock market depends on them, as do private companies like Jacobs Entertainment.

Trump's already giving the greenlight exempting current illegal farm labour:

lol

My porfolio is spread across the entire spectrum of risk. Sorry but the entire world economy would need to collapse for me to be back in the trailer park. Actually even then it wouldn't happen. The beauty of having no debt and a home sitting on natural resource rich land.
Something city people would have no idea about.
And my arrogance is a direct response to the over the top stupidity and anti America sentiment that permeates this cesspool of a forum. I can't count how many liberal posts I've seen here the past month or so actively hoping for our economy and country to fail because they don't like the person in charge.

Well that's hella' disingenuous.

So, Motorola will still be hit with tariffs? If so, I imagine they have lawyers of their own to fight this. Motorola phones are cheaper than Samsung and much cheaper than iPhones. They're manufactured all over the world, so the company may transfer some Chinese production to other countries. Technically still an American company, Motorola is a subsidiary of Chinese company Lenovo. They should also be receiving exemptions.

Apple's main competitor is Samsung, which will be hit with SK tariffs, whatever they may be. Should make the Galaxy more expensive than an iPhone. Government interference in the economy of this type is inherently authoritarian.

Did my own homework and it turns out that your claim is a lie.

The product codes exempt are broad and do not discriminate by manufacturer. All smartphones are exempted whether it be Apple, Samsung or anybody else’s. Your claim that this was a move by some companies to damage other companies turns out to be false.

You want him to keep those tariffs on? I don't get it. He's dammed if he does and damned if he doesn't. He could find a cure for cancer and the haters would say he was just lucky.

How did you so easily miss the thrust of that post? Without straw-manning?

No, @Juks claim appears to be false. The codes exempted are not specific to manufacturers but cover broad classes of products. This turns out to be what we all thought it was: Donald Trump once again being forced to walk back his stupid decisions. It will happen again and again as he drops tariffs and exempts more and more products.

I'm currently very cautious. I'm waiting for GDP number April 30th. I'll rethink my current positions afterwards.

We're all waiting for that!

But, you know what? Trump threw us into so much chaos, we won't know how to interpret it when it comes out! I'm dead serious.

This started out as a trade war, but it has become a war. It's the start of another Cold War.
Chinese hegemony has already made it a cold war . China has use soft power, and is building it's hard power.
Russian sanctions just help China even more - and they partner with Russia in the Arctic

Containment of what? Invading Taiwan? Militarizing space? expanding claims to ridiculous levels in the S China Sea?
They use every possible malign trade barrier they can. Ya they need "containment" -I dont know if it's possible with our DEBT
but we can't just sit back and let it happen

The fact that the President of the United is charging millions of dollars for a private meeting at his private club would have in the past made conservatives light their hair on fire.

It once again shows that Conservatives believe in nothing.

The government has literally gone off its rails, becoming unconstrained.

I'm not sure why this would be problematic for anyone who supports a president who's had no issue calling others names. I mean, if it's changed your opinion or my look as a poster, then I can't help but wonder how it never affected your view on who should lead the country.

It seems you get stuck on how I refer to him rather than the points I make. I engaged with all sorts of folks here who called Biden all kinds of names if there was a point worth debating. To complain that I'm not mature while supporting someone who is far less mature is a bit comical. So rather than addressing the immaturity of the wide array of ridiculous policies of late, your focus is how I refer to him.
🤭
I was simply making a personal observation that it's changed the way I "see" you as a poster, someone whom I used to like to engage with. I was reading along, realizing you put that in every comment where you mention Trump now.

I know Trump uses name calling (much less so in his second term) and it's not something I admire about him or something I do. But it sure as heck wasn't going to convince me to vote for Joe Biden or Kamala Harris, lol. Those votes were a binary choice only. There are many more options than 2 when it comes to choosing posters on a forum to enjoy engaging with.

As far as the points you make, for me they've been overshadowed by your odd addiction to referring to Trump as "Donnie Boy". But it's no big deal. You have plenty of others to engage with and so do I. It's just something that hit me as I was reading in this forum today and found myself thinking - hmmm, that's too bad in that I used to enjoy that poster. Now, I can't help but view your posts and you in a new way.

China has been planning to undermine the US's role as the world's dominant power for at least the past decade and their ambitions for world dominance only accelerated under Xi.

The idea the past few years that somehow a crippled Russia is the greatest threat to the modern world shows how we've taken our eye of the ball of the true menace to world wide prosperity and freedom in the form of an evil snake who's tentacles are starting to reach every corner of the globe from Africa to central America and beyond.

I’m sorry, but do you care more about our national standing or your stock portfolio, dobieg?

What exactly do you want? Inexpensive consumer products and electronics from China and your stock portfolio to increase, or five to ten years of hardship while America re-industrializes? Because you cannot have both. And if you think you can, please explain how.
