Trump considers DeSantis for Defense secretary as Hegseth appears to falter

Is that the strategy? To first nominate one of the most reprehensible people on Earth to set the expectations, then when he falters go one step less repulsive?

Considering the concubine of suitors the GOP has become, the nation could do worse than DeSantis. Not much worse of course but it strains the imagination to come up with a name that the GOP Senate wouldn’t approve. So I’ll take DeSantis. He likely knows the difference between a platoon and a brigade; something Trump does not.

One source said Graham, who has never found a war he didn’t want other people to fight, spent the weekend crying to Trump about Hegseth, while Ernst has been running an inside-the-beltway campaign to knife Hegseth.

Sources say the WSJ article touting DeSantis is a key part of the Ernst/Graham operation to torpedo Hegseth because of his foreign policy views and opposition to endless, pointless wars.

What I don't get is why Trump is making all of these unforced errors and naming nominees so quickly. He could have waited until late December and made a big show about interviewing prospects for the top positions and then gage the reaction of the public and GOP Senators before making a pick. Naming people and then having to name people to replace them just makes him look weak.

If you've done this before you shouldn't make rookie mistakes.

DeSantis would be better off appointing himself to Rubio''s Senate seat. I still can't imagine Trump picking DeSantis.....he doesn't present well on TV but if he agrees to appoint Trump's DIL as the quid pro quo....maybe.
I doubt he can get away with that.

Pete today

The Senate is furiously trying to keep from going on the record with an up/down vote. We still have Patel, RFKJr and Gabbard to go. I don’t see the Senate standing up to all the unqualified nominees….

True, but requiring FBI background checks would be a big step forward to at least getting a grip on potential threats to National Security.

"President-elect Donald Trump is considering nominating Republican presidential rival Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as Defense secretary, according to two people familiar with the situation.

DeSantis would replace Pete Hegseth, whose prospects for confirmation appear to be dimming amid allegations of sexual assault and alcohol abuse.

A final decision has not been made, according to the two people, who were granted anonymity to discuss internal matters.

Bringing DeSantis into the Trump administration fold could help the governor’s political prospects given that he is term-limited and scheduled to leave office in early 2027 when it was anticipated he could run for president again. It would lead to the ascension of Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, who would be the first female governor of Florida and the first of Cuban descent."

Trump's pretty famous for high turnover of personnel, but one expects this sort of thing to happen after they are confirmed and have served long enough to evoke his ire.

If Trump lets the Nazi democrats get away with Kavanaughing Hegseth he is a fool. Don't negotiate with terrorists - certainly don't FOLD to the terrorists. And yes, the democrats are terrorists with these fake sex scandal attacks. Every time democrats get away with it, it further encourages them.

DeSanctus, lol. He will say no. He is savy enough to know a poisoned chalice.

Don't be so sure about that he is the epitome of wannabe and in 2 years he is unemployed.

He will unemployed even sooner if he accepts. Trump will have him fired within a few months.

Which is why he would be much smarter to appoint himself to the Senate

Great. Even if that was the whole story, and there were no allegations of sexual assault or drinking problems, maybe - just maybe he might be qualified for an Assistant Secretary of the VA position. Not SecDef.
Sexual assault was refuted by a police investigation

You'd prefer someone insolated from the effects of war on the war fighters?
