Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘legitimate

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

That's your ignorant opinion and you're entitled to it. It doesn't change the fact that when tRump holds out this hard, this long, on doing something that should have been mundane, that he should have done three years ago, it gives all the impression that he's hiding something in there.

I love you guys. My opinion is "ignorant"...you people just keep being dismissive and self-absorbed. It's a characteristic that's becoming a trademark of the left.

Your opinion is laughably, rankly ignorant. But then, by your own admission, you support lawlessness and hate the rule of law, so it's hardly surprising.

And here come the juvenile insults, now that you have given up on even trying to refute my point.

More hiding of all the illegal history of this criminal.

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

Congress is not making the request. Unless I lost track in the chaos, a specific Committee within the House of Representatives is demanding the President's Tax Returns.

United States Congress legal definition of United States Congress

The Congress of the United States is the highest lawmaking body in the United States and one of the oldest national legislatures in the world. Established under the terms of the U.S. Constitution in 1789, the House of Representatives and the Senate have for over 200 years created the federal laws governing the United States

A committee in congress is a part of congress. I can't believe I'm having to explain this. If a committee is making a lawful request, its the same as the whole of congress making the request. The fact that you want to divert the discussion away from the actual request to stupid and insignificant details like "actually it's part of congress making a request, not congress" goes to show how little you have to stand on. Your entire defense is "but the politicians are being political!" That doesn't fly.

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

Mnuchin says he won'''t release Trump'''s tax returns, says it lacks '''legitimate legislative purpose'''

Basically, Mnuchin and Barr are saying "Let's take this to court and see what they say". That's EXACTLY what they should do too.

Frankly, it kind of feels good to see an administration fight for justice and the rights of the American people.

How is this fighting for the rights of the regular folks of this country?

It isn't.

Stop lying.

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

they are not happy with the work of the IRS

that is what i get out of their letter

would that pass a sniff test by a judge for a warrant? nope....

limited scope....

This isn't a warrant. There is no "probable cause" related to this law.

should be...

if not, it violates the 4th amendment

No. The 4th A only deals with private property (basically). Any tax information you turn in to the IRS becomes property of the government.

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

The person in the story breaking the law is Steve Mnuchin. Not Trump.

I do not agree with that point either. Mnuchin is protecting the information under his charge as is a part of his directives and prerogatives as Secretary of Treasury. The main rule in play here is that tax returns are private information not to be disclosed without consent or specific need as ruled by the Supreme Court.

Again, congressional committees need to provide a good reason for demanding the tax return. They have not, and I am suggesting their relatively weak opportunity to gain said return has long since passed.

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

This is the first time it has been invoked as a purely political weapon that I know of. Sometimes you don't see the trouble with a law until it is abused...

Link that this is purely political.

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

I'm appalled that so many are fine and dandy with this whole "guilty until proved innocent" thing in relation to Trump.

They had no problem with that during the Kavanaugh circus, so it should be no surprise they have no problem with it here.

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

No, it couldn't:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.

IRS data files aren't any person's "houses, papers, [or] effects". They belong to the IRS.

IRS data files are also not to be used as POLITICAL WEAPONS.

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

That is odd, it has been on the books for 95 years and no court has overruled it as unconstitutional. Wonder why?

Possibly because no one outside of Congress knew about it and/or it hasn't been challenged before.

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

Yeah. I was TOTALLY naive in my assumption that they would be embarrassed by that display and the overall failure of the exercise. I never figured they'd try to double down on that kind of nonsense.

Tax returns are confidential. The law you keep posting says so.

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

I am simply BLOWN AWAY that so many people are fine and dandy with Trump being forced to disclose his tax returns. I'm appalled that so many are fine and dandy with this whole "guilty until proved innocent" thing in relation to Trump. I'm angry that it's not just folks on political discussion forums that feel this way but SITTING ELECTED OFFICIALS!!

This kind of stuff is absolutely anathema to the principles of individual liberty upon which the nation was founded. That those principles would be so readily cast aside by people sworn to protect the Constitution is infuriating.

But, surely you aren't surprised...lol

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

Tax returns are confidential. The law you keep posting says so.

Yes, confidential, but not because of the 4A. But the law also says House Ways and Means can request tax returns.

Re: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin won’t release Trump’s tax returns to Congress, says no ‘

Yes, confidential, but not because of the 4A. But the law also says House Ways and Means can request tax returns.

It also says:

(g) Disclosure to President and certain other persons
(1) In generalUpon written request by the President, signed by him personally, the Secretary shall furnish to the President, or to such employee or employees of the White House Office as the President may designate by name in such request, a return or return information with respect to any taxpayer named in such request.

I think the president should excercise his own oversight authority. :lamo

If he feels he has a legit reason and can put it in writing, fire away. It's the law.
