I don’t think civil unions were recognized for things such as social security benefits being eligible for a civil union partner like they are for a spouse.

I also know that employer health insurance plans didn’t necessarily recognize civil unions - so in a time where the vast majority of Americans had health insurance only available to them via employer sponsored plans, it would leave a partner unable to be covered on another insurance plan.

Legal marriages opened up a lot of financial protections to people that didn’t have them without it in the US.

And it gets the Bible thumpers angry to think that other people whom they do not consider “equal” hold equal rights legally.

That’s really what this boils down to. Those who turn up their sanctimonious noses at who is beloved to another person and want to hold themselves in an elevated place.

Look in this thread, posters having to repeatedly use the word “sodomy” because they don’t personally agree with who other people love and marry - so they purposefully use a word to demean others.

This is done to try to make them feel/appear superior. Classic ad hominem logical fallacy.

I lived in Japan for a few years and I can say that this is a big step. Japan's not had a particularly religious or ideological opposition to LGBT issues but culturally, it's long been regarded as 'abnormal' or 'weird'. Japan also has a long tradition of macho militarism, which tends to be hostile toward gay men. This is good to see.

I don’t know about that, I strongly doubt that you are a Buddhist theologian however. I don’t really see where else in the orient homosexuality is celebrated like it is in North America. China still considers it to be a mental disorder, Taiwan had homosexual “marriage” Forced on them by a court after overwhelmingly rejecting it at the ballot box. Vietnam doesn’t have gay marriage, nor does India.

Lesbians do not have sex unless an object is involved. Any acts which they perform to each other are masturbation or foreplay. Those things are disordered when not the predicate for unprotected unitive sex between a man and a woman, but it’s not sodomy. Again unless a foreign object is involved.

They actually don’t, that is why HIV Is nearly always spread through penetrative anal sex. (excluding intravenous drug use of course) The anus does not lubricate like the vagina does before receiving a penis, cuts and tears and injury are very common when engaging in that form of behavior.
