I have been patient with all the nonsense coming from the GOP and their blind devotion to Trump. I have waited for the reality of his actions to sink in, the 4 indictments, the 91 charges against America, the lies, the misleading statements and his childish behavior. I truly thought the party will wake up and realize what a destructive force he has become and how his followers are just as guilty. I have suffered through people like MTG, Bobert, Gaetz and Johnson that are clearly unwilling to save America along with the likes of folks like McConnell who would rather quit than fight.

I have always felt it was enough to just be a Never-Trump Republican, it was not. Today, putting a clearly unqualified DIL of Trump in as co-chair of the RNC without questioning her motives was just too much. The sheep have spoken and I no longer wish to have my name associated with them.

This morning I had my records dropped from the roles of our state GOP and changed my party affiliation to Democrat, my new card is on the way. I never thought I would see the day after 46 years voting red until 2020. Donald, this is on you.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you switch to Dem and not just go unaffiliated?

Because I am active in politics and work with my party. I facilitate meetings, knock on doors and work with the likes of Mitt Romney. I can't sit on the sidelines, you take a stand and get involved.

Probably lots more like you out there. Trump is far more likely to alienate conservatives than to win converts with his behaviour.
And for every one like you who changed parties there's liable to be one or two who will just sit it out and wait for a new leader to restore order. I think they'll be disappointed though. Trump may leave the stage but his cult will still be noising it up in the GOP.

IMO, the best way to look at this is not you leaving the GOP; it’s the GOP that left you. They left me a long time ago. I’ve been “party free” for some time, and I can tell you peace of mind will come from supporting ideas, not political parties. FWIW.

On the good side: good move to leave R; and good to see going to D instead of no party, though I'm a bit dubious of what you will support for Democrats. And kudos on civic involvement. On the bad: overdue. A lot did this at the Hollywood Access tapes or before. Even as the large majority of R supported trump's attempt to steal the election and nearly all voted against his impeachment...

Didn't happen.
The Democrats, politically or ideologically, have nothing a Republican would support.

You are not alone.
I have many Republican friends, these people are in the late 40s to mid 60s age range and call themselves real conservatives, and at a recent gathering the question was asked who they would be supporting in November.
A few said Trump, about the same number, maybe a few more, said Biden, and the majority of them said they would not be voting at all.

There were a dozen times the GOP had a good reason to ditch Trump, starting with the Hollywood Access tape.

My mom was a Nixon voter in '60. She voted a Republican straight ticket until her last vote was for Biden in '20.

I'm a bit torn between nevertrumpers leaving the party, and staying in it to try to keep it from becoming just the radicalized. Our system has so much built into 'the two parties' that it's dangerours for one to become the traitor party. It's ok if it leads to the end of the party, but it's probably more likely it could actually win an election at some point. The lessons from the Nazis... Germany thought it couldn't happen.

And welcome to the party! We'll try not to let fringe get too weird. Save some punch and cake for the Haley voters, they're on their way.

I'm with you. We've long been a country governed by the two-party system. While I disagreed on most issues with Republicans of yore - several decades ago, with exceptions such as John McCain - I didn't have reason to doubt their patriotism, their respect for the rule of law and order, their acceptance of long-standing societal and political norms, and, in general, their good intentions and commitment to governance.
It's ok if it leads to the end of the party, but it's probably more likely it could actually win an election at some point. The lessons from the Nazis... Germany thought it couldn't happen.
EXCELLENT point. I've always known that what happened in Germany could occur here. I just never thought I would live to see it.

For those of us who aren't aware of how German society, culture, and politics were taken over by Hitler and National Socialism, now would be an appropriate time to do some research.

Do you have any idea how refreshing it is to hear someone who still identifies as conservative say that? You go NAT! There is hope as long as folks like you exist! :)

After 40 years of voting almost exclusively (I refuse to vote for the highly immoral) for conservative candidates I switched to 'anything that will remove the Trump and maga crazy in 2016/17. I still think of myself as a conservative centrist, but right now the priority for me is to see Trump defeated and maga depowered. That means zero votes for anything maga, and not even votes for conservatives that are to scared to fight maga from within the party. Straight Dem ticket is the best way to try and get rid of the maga crazy. Even if Trump were to win his race, a full Dem control of congress can limit the damage to some extent. Similar at state level. Won't support maga, and won't support the religious take over that is being attempted. There may though be some conservatives at state level worth supporting. Let's see how they line themselves up.

Yep. We need actual - "old-time", to me - conservatives. Just as we need voters from all political persuasions.

I guess you'll really go through the roof if he wins...

EXACTLY.

I'm a staunch Democrat, but, over the years, I have voted for Republicans at the local and state levels (Voinovich, for governor and for Senator, comes to mind). But now, at this moment of peril, I do believe we need to vote straight Democratic, in local, state, and Federal elections.

I want the "old-time" Republican Party - or a modern version, in a non-MAGA form - to come back. And as soon as possible.

Thank you for the kind words, but politically speaking, it’s rather lonely existence. There are no candidates of consequence that one could call a socially moderate and a fiscally conservative (my brand of conservatism), so I’m stuck year after year deciding which candidate is the least bad.
