If I am lucky I may have ten years left
I think you're too pessimistic, here. We're not our fathers' or grandfathers' generations.
and I intend to live those ten years being as happy as I can with the little things.
Our daughter will be a fairly well off person when we go, so we don't have to worry about her, and we're going to do okay financially.
All my efforts paid off with a big fat nothing, the American experiment with a republican constitution and representative democracy has failed, fallen victim to multi-billion dollar propaganda with no small amount of help from hostile foreign actors.
We will not see the like of this experiment again in our lifetimes, certainly not mine.
So I will live out my life trying to find joy in the smaller things, like keeping my wife happy in her remaining days.
The world can go **** itself for all I care.
If this current generation wants its democracy back they are going to have to fight hard for it.
I'm not sure what to make of this. Intellectually, I see the prospect. You're very good at the big picture - always were since your first days here. I get what you're saying.
But, I'm not quite so pessimistic. Yes, some genies have been released - never to return to their bottles. But, pendulums do swing.
