When you order food to go from a restaurant and don't use table service do you leave a tip anyway? I mean, I don't tip at any fast food places or other places where you order at the counter so it's never occurred to me to tip at a regular restaurant if I order out. I figure that I'm not taking up any of the servers time as it's usually a hostess or the manager who handles things and they are usually getting a full wage instead of server rate.

I understand. Half the time when I'm ordering out it's because the place has good food but crummy service.
 
Yes, but usually at slightly lower rate than I tip for table service. Unless the waitress is hot.

20% for table
 
I'm very generous as a tipper when attending a restaurant to eat and even when I'm receiving delivery of food at the door. These are people who generally receive less in wages because being tipped is part of the culture of the service they provide.

I do not tip for any food I pick up at a counter myself - I would no more tip the counter help at McDonalds or Swiss Chalet than I would if I was buying underwear at the local department store.

If people are going to be expecting tips every time they interact with others as part of their jobs, then be assured that the counter help at the DMV or any other government service window won't be far behind.
 
I pretty much never takeout from an actual restaurant so it's not really a question, but if I did, no I wouldn't tip them. Who am I supposed to be tipping? The only people who get a tip normally are wait staff who are providing me a service above and beyond the bill for the food. Nobody is doing that for takeout, who has earned a tip?

No, I only tip if I'm getting service at a table or if I'm ordering delivery.

I only tip servers. Everyone else in the food biz is paid a full wage.

Pretty much same here.

I tip for table service.
I tip for delivery.

I do not tip for take out.
I rarely tip for buffets (I'm pretty much serving myself)
I absolutely refuse to do tip jars. That's nothing less than outright begging, IMO.
 
The third choice was "Sometimes (Explain)". I did the third choice. I have a local food venue I frequent twice a week for REALLY REALLY GOOD home made soups. They have other good choices. If I call in a pickup order and it is one of my usual wait staff, I know they will have the cook give me a little extra, etc. as I have a "relationship" with them ( actually know tons about them because of frequency seeing them) I will give them a tip when I pickup. Maybe not my usual but something.
 
It's bad enough I have to tip a waiter simply for doing the job and not for the quality of his/her service when I eat in. Why should I tip when I am essentially serving myself?

If you were just fair - 10%
If you were great - 15%
If you were one of the best waiters I've ever had - 20%
 
I see no reason to tip for takeout. The only reason why people tip is because wait staff makes less than minimum wage. It's a commission based on services provided. The cooks make a full wage, and the cashier is only pushing buttons and taking money.

That's almost exactly how I go about it.
 
No, I don't tip for take out. There is no reason. The top is for the servers, I am generous to servers, even more so to delivery drivers but the goober that brings my bag to me, no, i don't do that. It's like giving the person at McDonalds a tip for handing your bag to you. No, no tip on that kind of thing.

We know. We are Canada in your name lol.

But I won't quote the rest as I 100% agree. I actually tip so well that waiters and waitresses remember me and I get better service. Of course I was taught to tip to the quality of service. It isn't rare for me to leave a 100% tip.

Actually. Me and a few friends/coworkers who were also known as generous tippers used to play game of "who can tip the highest." It was basically a pissing contest on who would be more generous. I only one once or twice...but one waitress had like $75 check (between like 7 people) and a $200 tip.

What I hate is when tips are pooled. I think that is crap. I want my tip to go 100% to the person I tipped. They earned it. Not the lazy sack who only gets minimal tips because he can't pull his weight.
