This Newsweek poll is stunning.

Though the overall number shows that 69% of people oppose impeachment, think about it:

a plurality and maybe a majority (M.o.E.) of democrats support officially charging President Bush with a high crime.

I can detail all of my disagreements with the President:

@ No child left behind

@ Bush judicial appointments

@ Bush admin.'s decisions in the executive branch

@ Iraq war

etc.

BUT

There's no serious argument that he has committed an Impeachable offense. The closest would be, IF he and others in his administration intentionally presented false information to justify the war in Iraq, Yet, the facts show that absolutely not to be the case.

No one can rationally argue he should be impeached because he broke the FISA law on wiretapping, when every available evidence shows this to be a bureacratic problem of informing Congress/Courts. No politicians has advocated against the underlying conduct.

What these poll numbers show are the power of the media as a group to define an issue, and the ignorance of the American people. Those who argue they would "trust the first 1,000 people in the telephone book" rather than the editorial board of the New York Times aren't living in the real world.

We should be scared that ANYBODY would support impeachment. We need more education, and more mature Americans involved in the politiical system.

BTW, I'm positive rank and file Republicans would believe the same thing of a President Kerry.

All of this notwithstanding, this is still the best country in the world.

craigfarmer,

This is the best post I've seen by a liberal on this site. Well done!

Cannot be said enough! Bold added by Your Master.

The evidence presented in post #1 does not, in my opinion, support the conclusion that the leadership needs to be an elite. However, certainly the general population, from which leaders appear needs to become nearly as educated as an elite. How else can voters be expected to cast wise votes, when an issue is presented directly to them for resolving (say an amendment to a State Constitution), instead of it being resolved by representatives?

Next, here are some things for which President Bush might be impeach-able. Maybe not any one thing by itself suffices, but when added up...

What the heck is going on in here? Every post I see here seems thoughtful and devoid of flaming rhetoric (or at least as close as one can expect). Of course it can't last, but hey, cool.

I agree that there is no justification for impeachment, and if the Democrats are smart, they will have learned from a few Republicans' mistakes during the Clinton Administration. The American PEOPLE choose the president, and we don't like congress stepping on our toes without an incredibly good reason.
