It is disheartening to one who came of age in the time of giants, Konrad Adenauer, David Ben Gurion, Harry Truman, Charles de Gaulle, to name a few. Compare any of these to our current president and tell me what you see.

People that have no memories of war and I mean actually serving in a 'real' war, not like the political wars we have now. That's why military are coming back with PTSD, they know they aren't fighting for freedom and democracy. They're putting their lives on the line for oil and yes, even to protect poppy fields. There's no honor for any serviceman in that. They don't know what it feels like to lose 20% of the guys you went to high school with because they were drafted to serve and die in rice paddy fields or thick jungles-- all for nothing, absolutely nothing. They've never heard Martin Luther King or John F. Kennedy speak live or watch the first man to step foot on the moon. These were amazing moments of glory and pride for our country. What do we have now that we can really be proud of on the global stage?

These Trumpers would deny the fact that the 'good old USA' is responsible for the upheaval of governments in Central America by arming rebels with US made weapons to oust political leaders that the US didn't want in power because we feared those nasty 'Commies'. They would call us 'liars' and 'traitors' if we explained to them how throughout the second half of the twentieth century, the US advanced its interests through puppet governments, advancing the interests of the elite classes, who ignored the demands of the peasant and working class.

There's something Americans need to do in order to make this country stronger going into the future and that's to admit the failings and evil deeds we're responsible for in the past. We are not a perfect country, and we shouldn't believe we are. Nevertheless, democracy is still worth fighting for. We can fix it but we have to know what's wrong with it first.
