Stuttgart? So you have Swabian ancestors?I had 3 years of high school German which came in handy when I was assigned there in ‘67. I lived on the economy for a short while before being sent to VN. I enjoyed it while I was there and felt I had been there before, maybe because my family originally came here from Stuttgart. Even though it was 22 years after the end of WWII, you could still find remnants from the war. I understand that most of those have been removed.
i found that the Merlin engine was used in British and American aircraft.i will now google for Merlin engine!

Beer, sausage, and sauerkraut ...
and what else?
do you know which region your ancestors came from?I don't really have much of a desire to travel either within or out of the country these days, but if I were to go anywhere, I'd like to go back to Germany and Austria, and perhaps the British Isles as well. I try not to be one of those obnoxious Americans who always goes around claiming that I'm German, French, Austrian, British, Scottish, Irish and whatever else I am - I'm American. But I do have a certain level of curiosity about my roots and where my ancestors came from, and I've thought it would be cool to go back and retrace steps at some point before I'm too old.

Alsace and Palatinate is just across the Rhine from where i liveAt the time, I believe it was part of the Kingdom of Bavaria, but it's now Rhineland-Palatinate. Actually, I think there's a line that came from near the Austrian-German border and also the French-German border (Alsace-Rhineland) and the two kind of met in that region before they began migrating out of Germany around the time of the 1848 upheaval.

It's been a while however, my memory is that it tastes like peppermint flavored cough syrup.Schnapps. But not for me. Don't know how it tastes. I was post diapers age. My grandfather always had a bottle in the cupboard. It was in a long black bottle with square sides.
schnaps comes in about 1000 or more tastes, not just one. It's been a while however, my memory is that it tastes like peppermint flavored cough syrup.
I sampled but a few of them and that was in the 1970s. I also tried Jagermeister.schnaps comes in about 1000 or more tastes, not just one.
and Edelbranntwein is very pleasant
yes, there was a Germany long before 1871 ADMu ancestral homeland. Great bread, good cars and 2000 years of history.
