I'm all for pragmatism when it relates to accomplishing a result, but what you describe isn't that. It's pragmatism in service of reelection chances. If you're a politician, you should generally stick to what you ran on. I suppose I can leave wiggle room for someone honest enough to say "you know....I now see that I didn't fully understand this issue, and here's what I think now / why".

Purity tests are a bad thing (for example, not having a rigid anti-Israel stance as being a test of a 'true progressive'). But if you run as a progressive on all things, then govern as a centrist on all things, it starts to look like you hoodwinked people about what you really stood for.
