Texas already has a health care system that is a mess.

Two thirds of the counties in Texas don't have an OB.

Now, because of the abortion bans Texas has, more OBs and nurses are leaving the state.

Women who miscarry are being forced to suffer until either the heart of the fetus stops or the woman is about to die.

Being pregnant in Texas is very dangerous now. People are leaving the state. Not just those in the medical industry either.

People are having to either leave the state or throw away years of education.

People are not choosing to go to Texas to practice medicine and even fewer OBs are going to the state to work.

It's not just Texas either. It's all the states that have enacted abortion bans.

There is no could about this. It will get worse and the people who are suffering is women.

This is exactly what I said would happen.

It's a long article but well worth reading the whole thing.

There are thousands of high paid openings in the Canadian system.

They may want you to spend a year in the Yukon, which would be an adventure!

The pay is good and there is great job stability! You can work anywhere in the country!

The health of pregnant women in Texas is very much at risk according to the situations described in the article.

Yes Texas has a very high pregnancy mortality rate already and it's going up.

Women are being forced into situations that they don't have to face in civilized states where doctors can do their jobs without a big government nanny telling them what they can or can't do.

The TX legislature didn't consider any issue beyond their political desires. Even if they are anti-abortion, is there any reason why a woman should vote for TX R's?

Thanks for posting that. I'll post this again, since I believe that this is very closely related and a consequence that will now get worse, with so many more men confronting getting stuck with 18 yrs of child support:

Altho they dont break them out specifically in murder rates, they do state that by far, the most frequent cause of death for pregnant women is murder by the sperm donor.
And they also dont include murder in the statistics about deaths due to pregnancy/childbirth.
No. 1 Cause of Death in Pregnant Women: Murder
FROM THE WEBMD ARCHIVES
"Given all the risks associated with pregnancy, it's easy to imagine that expectant mothers are vulnerable to illnesses and even to death. But shocking new information shows that these women actually are more likely to be murdered than to die from any complications of pregnancy -- or from any other cause for that matter.

"We found that homicide was the leading cause of death among women who were pregnant ... and accounted for 20% of deaths among that group, compared with 6% of deaths among nonpregnant women of reproductive age," says author Isabelle Horon, DrPH"

So now consider...with so many more women unable to access abortions...that many more men are going to be stuck with child support for 18 years...and many will be pretty pissed about it. Pretty sure that 20% murder rate is going to go up. :(

Yes that rate will increase in red states that have outlawed abortion.

Being pregnant in Texas is not safe and can be a matter of life and death.

The sad part is according to the article, the republicans in the Texas congress don't see this as a problem and aren't willing to modify their laws.

Wealthy enough women will travel across state lines to get quality medical care. Those who cannot afford to do that will deal with longer waits, substandard care, and (if the fringe extremists have their way) criminal charges in certain circumstances.

Texas has always had a significant shortage of physicians and OBGYN’s compared to the national average. I haven’t seen any evidence that what is happening is anything other than the trend that has been noted for many years. The anecdote in the article doesn’t do it.

So a two tiered society.

One that has money and can get the medical care they need in other states.

The other one doesn't have money so has to suffer under the laws of Texas. Many will die. Those who don't die will be left infertile.

I don't understand why any woman would live in Texas.

the ultimate purpose of the abortion law was as much about controlling the sex lives of people as it was killing the unborn........there are no limits on self righteous fundamentalists.......

Do Cons ever think of any long term consequences to their actions?

Always been that way to one degree or another, and not just in Texas.

In this context that disparity feels especially pernicious, because the primary motivation for exacerbating the disparity is fueled by religion.

If you want to carry to term, you have a heightened risk of being murdered by the baby daddy. If you terminate your pregnancy, you're safer. Ironic, isn't it?

LOL, from your link:
In Texas, the current numbers look pretty good. The number of obstetrician-gynecologists per 10,000 adult women in Texas is 2.6, while the state has 5.5 obstetrician-gynecologists per 10,000 women of child-bearing age, both above the national standard, Dr. Rayburn says.

[No one should trust your "synopsis" of links.]

An article from December, 2011? Your "trend" is missing 11 years of data.

Are you under the assumption that the current GOP machinations are going to make it better?

Do Cons ever think of any long term consequences to their actions?

No, conservatives are all about instant gratification.

No matter who it hurts or kills.

So you are telling me that threatening doctors with harsh legal punishments for doing their job means that they will leave the state?

Who could have seen that coming?

If you want to carry to term, you have a heightened risk of being murdered by the baby daddy. If you terminate your pregnancy, you're safer. Ironic, isn't it?

But even if you want an abortion, they've greatly restricted access, so she wont even have a choice to take those risks.

Well IMO one 'positive' thing for poorer women is that they may have a good chance their partner will help them with travel and $$ to go to another state for the abortion to avoid 18 yrs of child support. I think more will be likely to do that rather than murder the women but of course, the data shows how risky that can be too. :(

But what about those women who have a planned and wanted pregnancy that has gone wrong?

They will suffer. Most will be left infertile. Hopefully none will die but there is no guarantee no woman will die because of this.

It's just a matter of time before women start dying.

No you don’t get it.

The right wing has spent decades pretending that women who get later term abortions are selfish whores.

They don’t care.

It’s only a matter of time before we have our own Savita Halappanavar and the people who support these nonsense laws will blame everything and everyone but themselves and the laws that they put into place

Bookmark this.

You all know it is true.

?? They all suffer if they dont get the treatment they need. If they need an abortion...and only the pregnant woman herself is in a position to decide that...then she'll suffer if she cannot get that treatment. It's bullshit and cruel for these laws to stand.

By removing a woman's consent to that choice for her life, (her entire life, every day, not just to save her life), bodily autonomy, self-determination, liberty, they are doing exactly what was done to the slaves.

We ended slavery for the same reasons. How do people justify this? Do any pro-life supporters want to answer?
