This is entirely a self-inflicted wound. Not saying this wasn’t foreseeable but maybe 40-50 years down the line in its totality. Now it’s right here.

It’s expensive being “world cop”, but it gives one a lot to say about what’s going on. It’s expensive being world economics leader and the hub of the wheel on free world trade, but it gives one a lot to say about what’s going on.

We are going to regret this as a nation, and many of us are going to regret having voted for it.

Some of us tried to tell you this was where Trump was going. The impact on our global trading position, the impact on rip the guts out of it immigration handling, the impact on what’s coming next unless Congress grows a set and stops it - the complete change in federal governing to an all powerful executive.

I'm just pointing out that civilizations are born, they mature, decline gradually, and then sharply. The only question is whether or not they completely disintegrate like the Mayans or Western Rome, or is there a more controlled descent like we had from Britain and France after WW2.

I very much blame MAGA - there's definitely agency. But if we step back a bit, we can see that this situation has been unfolding for a while. MAGA's the culmination of decades of rot within the American system, which has created systemic inequities and cultural wedges that threaten to lead us to violent conflict.

Manufacturing unions accomplished some good, such as the 40 hour week, paid vacations, etc. But unions grew to be ends in themselves (see also Jimmy Hoffa), dedicated more to personal political power and wealth than the benefit of their members. The unions had their day, but it's passed.

I note that, in the article you linked, Buffet doesn't make any comment about buying now. It just repeats his 2017 advice to buy when the market is down. However, if I were still in the markets, I'd buy. No matter how the tariff hulabaloo turns out, the Dow will be back higher than it is now.
