Remember the sci-fi thriller GATTACA? For those who never saw the film and/or eschewed all pop culture in the late 90’s for some reason, it was a popular movie that came out in 1997 about genetically modified human beings. Now some literally genetically modified human babies born that same year are entering their senior year of high school. The first successful transfer of genetic material for this purpose was published in a U.S. medical journal in 1997 and then later cited in a Human Reproduction publication in 2001. Scientists injected 30 embryos in all with a third person’s genetic material. The children who have been produced by this method actually have extra snippets of mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA, from two mothers – meaning these babies technically have three parents.

These teens could potentially pass on their genetically modified material to the next generation. So even if no other humans are legally able to be created this way in the future, we’ve already introduced biologically modified genetic material into the population with the potential to affect large swaths of future generations to come via reproduction.....snip~

Could these people be called Mutants? What do you think of this concept of Designer Babies? What about medically with not passing on some disease?

Teenagers to graduate and if they are having sex and swapping spit. They are passing on their genetic material to any they encounter. What say ye?

You do understand that this will have been done to overcome some genetic deficiency, to stop the development of a disease. That's if it's true in the first place. And that the DNA has come from other humans. That there is no biological problem/threat here.

No?

Oh, failed at biology at school them did you?

I sure hope they document it well, because it could sure mess up DNA genealogy.
I would not worry about them passing on bad genes,
Nature has a way of thinning out the bad strains.

What's the problem? We've had cloned human babies for years

I see a reality TV show, perhaps a Lifetime movie event... no?

I'm not going to have kids ... and don't have any so my view really isn't too valid. That said, designer babies or GMO kids would just seem to take the suspense and fun out of it. That said, who wouldn't want to be able to click through a questionnaire where your kids could be designed? Of course, the accuracy of such a method would need to take about 20 years to verify - but if we all could choose - wouldn't we want to choose the best? IQ of 280, model looks, removed all genetic diseases or abnormalities and a guarantee to live to 120 years with the optional DNA to create new organs if needed.... don't get the undercoating though --- it's a scam.

Yeah, did you see that question to include over medical.

Did your biology class include 3-somes? What were your test results. Myself I went with A Redhead and a Blonde. But you couldn't tell anyways.....since they dyed their hair.

The only time I would ever want to modify my child would be if it were to deter things like mental retardation and the likes.

Deficient beings put huge drains on resources and it would break my heart to create one.

Yeah for the Progressives and liberals.....they will just have to tune-in.

I think designer babies if they became rampant would could pose huge problems. Variety isn't just the spice of life it's also important for a species survival. Yes, humankind is very different than a lot of species since our survival seems to be based on a lot of human created rules rather than the rules of the jungle but messing with nature when you don't understand it makes me nervous. Who knows what the effects could be? Would different culture groups have populations that look similar due to their cultures definition of beauty?

Like it or not, this is the future of humanity, IMO. As the science grows so to will the pressure to design your own children. In some ways it is also a natural progression for civilized intelligent beings.

These threads are always crawling with old people uncomfortable with a science they don't understand. Augmentation, enhancement, and design are the exciting future of our species. That being said the gene therapies in question were medical therapies designed to correct severe defects. Talking about 'passing on' these 'genetically modified genes' as though this is even an issue or something to fear is ridiculous.

Re: The World’s First Genetically Modified Babies Will Graduate High School This Year

My son is pre-med to be a geneticist. All this hoopla is overrated. It isn't that big a deal.

However, Genetics and Genomics are what will cure the currently incurable and eventually prevent future pain, suffering and untimely death.

Too many people are afraid of this simply due to ignorance and over active imaginations.

Who's showing fear? And what makes you think people are uncomfortable because they don't understand it? You're post is chock full of assumptions without foundation....
