Reasons

1) I had a full ride academic scholarship to college. I had to use it then.
2) My parents strongly opposed me joining the military. My parents both supported the military but neither believed that if a man was married, a father, or an only son (my status). that he should join the military. My mother expressed great disdain for one of her nephews (who had a family) who joined the National Guard.

3) After 9-11, I made inquiries with a recruiter even though I was 34 years old. He talked to me but told me that there was no place for me to serve unless I already had some specialized skill that the military could make use of. Such as medical, mechanical, or language skills. He pointedly said that the Army had no need for an untrained 34 year old infantryman.

I'll openly admit that one reason I inquired about joining the military after 9-11 was that I had lost my job.

The term coined by Bismarck often used to refer to the militarism and nationalism that helped create modern Germany. There are few things better to unite a people and a nation than a (perceived external threat) or a crusade to eliminate that threat and consolidate the power of a nation.

Personally, I've very tired of hearing about how divided the United States is and some repeatedly suggesting the U.S. needs to break up.

Wouldn't it be worth it to unit our country and give us renewed national purpose for at least a couple of decades or more?

In 1991, you would have been done with college when Gulf War 1 heated up. Same with Somalia in 93. Why didn't you enlist (or rather get commissioned) then? Were you under the control of your parents?
