The U.S. boycott remains strong. Why many Canadians are digging in their heels

Not the topic under discussion, no matter how doggedly you try to deflect to it.
You're talking about it, so yes, historic reference to the USMCA is on topic.
Back to your failure to chastise trump for his refusal to use the sanctioned method to resolve his "dispute" with our neighbor to the north: denial is strong among MAGA.
Gobbledlygook. Nobody needs to chastise the President of the United States for exercising his broad authority for established executive action as afforded under the Constitution. Under Article II, the President has authority to conduct foreign affairs and negotiate international agreements, including trade deals.

Hah! Been there! As a kid, with my folks.

My biggest take-away, from inside the museum, is how short and thin people were back then! And how they were grandparents and passed in their thirties. Thirty five was senior old age!

These memories are now making me a bit sad I didn't take my kids on more driving vacations.
I hear you! We all have regrets. Don't feel bad. It's just part of being a parent.
And you are right. You've got to get off the highways and interstates, and into the small towns. I actually enjoy day trips meandering around small Midwestern towns only an hour or two out from me. It's such a stark difference from big-city urban life.
Yes! When we were in Ireland, we self-toured, drove entirely around the country, off the beaten track, and had no reservations. Picked a bed and breakfast, and if it looked nice, we stayed there. No regrets! :)

Yep. But @MAGAnificent wants to deflect to Canada's role in that "historic reference to the USMCA". I'm not about to go along with this diversionary tactic.

"No one needs to chastise" the highest-in-the-land elected official when he unilaterally violates the USMCA by imposing tariffs on Canada?

Well, la-di-da. That you want to believe this gobbledygook is on you. But it doesn't mean the rest of us - here in a politics discussion group! - have to accept it as well.

I have literally done it all. Each road trip is special. Generally we have always had a theme the Gulf, Rte 66 , the outer banks, the East coast, the wonderful West....and more. Make a plan and do it......

I like you & your husband's style, Callen.

Right now I'm torn between New England and Door County (WI).

BTW, don't overlook the Great Lakes Region. Are you familiar with Door County? Or, the Upper Peninsula? (MI)

The Upper Peninsula is awesome! I've skied up there.

You still miss the larger point from my post. Why do you keep doing this? Don't preach to me about deflection when it is you who won't acknowledge another's actual point. "Nobody needs to chastise the President of the United States for exercising his broad authority for established executive action as afforded under the Constitution. You seem to be confusing a multilateral treaty with the US Constitution.

Try to remember that the Constitution does not apply to either Canada or to Mexico. That trump's unilateral violations of the international treaty need to be pointed out and repudiated, if only in order to show that many here in the USA - non-trump supporters - believe in this country's keeping its word, that many of us want our signature to mean something.

Our first wedding anniversary was spent in Door County!

We are headed to MI. for fall football. Our grandson plays. We plan to do some exploring.

You claim your husband is more the driving vacation guy, but I think you're in good hand with him!

I loved my ski bum days. Pick a place, put the skies on the roof rack, grab the credit card, and take off to the area of the slopes, with only a first night reservation. Then, let the wind blow me where it may!

No. No confusion on my part.
You are not comprehending the point, the executive's broad power under the Constitution. As the president, Trump has the authority to initiate this withdrawal process of the USMCA without approval, as the executive branch typically handles the termination of international agreements.

You seem unwilling to accept that we're not talking about an issue of US law, but an international treaty trump negotiated, signed ..... and is now violating.

That it seems to be fine and dandy with you that trump essentially tells the world that our signature, our word, are rubbish is something I don't understand. Then again, I deal in contracts, so perhaps that fact gives me an especial respect for hewing to what is agreed to and memorialized in writing between two or more parties..

I always have been. I've never worried with him behind the wheel.

I love that type of attitude. Too much overplanning is Debbie Downerville. ;)

We never got into downhill, but when we were back in the Midwest, our family took up cross country skiing. We used to go up to WI. with friends and their families. Rent a few cabins, and had the owners do the cooking for us. I can't remember the name of the place we went, but it was nice. They had a sauna on site. We'd ski until we were blue in the face, and then hit the sauna. The kids loved it!

Lol, buh-bye.

We did a great Michigan road trip in 2014. Holland, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Traverse City, Mackinaw Island, crossed over the top into Wisconsin on the way home. I hail from Green Bay, so Door County was my back yard so to speak. So much cuteness in Door County!!

Fabulous. Thanks for sharing. We used to go to the MI. state dunes when I was in high school and college. Is that the Warren Dunes? Anyway, it was a lot of fun.

Would you believe I still remember all that cuteness in Door County. It rained that weekend, and that even made it even better. Never been to the other places though. T/Y. It gives me somewhere to start. We also want to get back home to our roots, (Chicago), see some friends and a couple of family members, (my oldest son), and maybe have some good pizza, and get out to the cemetaries where our parents are buried. His in the Joliet area, mine on the southside, out at Holy Sepulchre, It might be our last time to Chicago. Who knows? Hubby and I are not getting any younger. Grandson has to earn his spot at QB, first year transfer, so we may be leaving at the last minute.

It's become the Midwest's Nantucket/Cape-Cod/Martha's Vineyard, of sorts!

Ah, but you'll be on the wrong side of the Lake! :p

I suppose there's always the possibility of an overnighter in Traverse or Petosky, though.

As to Door County, it's been a long time for me. Unfortunately I've been reading and anecdotally hearing it's really getting quite tourist laden. Not just the ubiquitous Chicagoans, but from across the country and even international.

One day my wife told me her NYC friends were so excited that they found the perfect place to summer, and even bought a house there! "Where", she asked? "Door County", of course!

I'm sure the internet isn't helping in this matter.

I'm so taken by the popularity and participation in domestic driving vacations in this thread, I might consider starting a thread dedicated to domestic travel. If I do, I'll be sure to let you and the other participants know. I think there might be enough of us to support such a thread.

Thanks for sharing all your stories! The last one about your wife left me lmao.
It's been a great thread for those of us who love traveling and are always planning our next adventure if only in our heads. . As to my grandson being on the wrong side of the lake that's what my brother, who lives in WI. said too! LOL
He said, tell me when he plays in WI.

At Callens admission, there are a few American Dairy producers who do meet Canadian standards. However, the 250 to 400% tariffs limit them in regard to taking full advantage of Canada's markets. No matter how you attempt to spin it, those tariffs even though quota based are protectionism policies to protect Canadian dairy, while at the same time Canadians are whining about American tariffs. And there is still Canadia subsidized lumber flooding the American lumber market.
Don't forget US dairy farmers are heavily subsidized

Been to many of those areas. Lots of vaycays in MI. Just breathtaking. But avoid the black fly time around the Great Lakes.
