The U.S. boycott remains strong. Why many Canadians are digging in their heels

So, are you saying Canadians have finally found an identity they could rally around? :p

I have NEVER seen the kind of Canadian pride exploding around me!

We used to see national pride as an American weakness. But Trump has changed the game. He's created a laser focus of the worst of American traits (how many bombings so far? How many citizens arrested? How many laws broken. How many threats issued? How many departed?)

And he barely made it through HALF a term.

What's Amerika going to look like after four years ?

Probably a lot like American Jews feel about Gazan terrorist sympathizers, and antisemites.

Americans are not endlessly threatening to attack and annex Canada. Over-generalize much?
Gee, except for the fact that Israel has decided to emulate the Nazis and inflict a Final Solution to the Palestinian Problem, wailing “Hamas” just as loudly as the Third Reich wailed “Versailles!”

lol yes, they are. And then they complain bitterly when called out on it.

There's no law says we have to adopt your lowest standards
At Callens admission, there are a few American Dairy producers who do meet Canadian standards. However, the 250 to 400% tariffs limit them in regard to taking full advantage of Canada's markets. No matter how you attempt to spin it, those tariffs even though quota based are protectionism policies to protect Canadian dairy, while at the same time Canadians are whining about American tariffs. And there is still Canadia subsidized lumber flooding the American lumber market.

Not sure what Canada's standards are for labeling made in Canada, but the US has very strict standards under the purview of the FTC. Very hard to label made in America when any part of the product, no matter how small is imported.

They have strict standards but it's only until recently they actually started to enforce it.

Canadians do not hate Americans and we will never do the wrong thing when it comes to the really important things that bind us. Which is why we don't understand why what we did on 9/11, our loss of blood and treasure in support of the US in Afghanistan and the amazing feat of getting your diplomats out of Iran means nothing to so many Americans.
It does mean something. It means a lot! So many Americans? Who are these Americans who live rent free?
I couldn't praise Canada enough for coming to our aid, most recently during the January 2025 disastrous fires in my state.
Obviously, CA.'s present government failed to get it done on our own. I will always be grateful for Canada sending their help.
We have come to your aid without even a question.....yet that seems to mean nothing. Can't you see why that may make us wonder if it's worth it.
Your new P/M obviously thinks it's worth it, and that should count for a lot with you, but if you personally do not think it's worth it, I'm finding it harder to take your posts seriously.

What tariffs?

We don't import your dairy because it's poison!!!!!

You use growth hormones that are illegal in Canada, Europe and anywhere there isn't a corrupt right-wing government.

The truth?????????????

The truth is your cheese isn't even food! It has not taste, has the consistency of rubber but melts
and looks good on a hamburger.
What you call "cheddar" is unripened farmer's cheese.

It's not food. It's an insult.

There's no law says we have to adopt your lowest standards

I'd argue the bolded is debatable!

lol yes, they are. And then they complain bitterly when called out on it.

So, we won't agree. Who knew.

"Half" a term?

Try "one-eighth"!

Living a great distance from the US Canadian border, I have never been there. I once had the opportunity to go there on business, however I sent someone else. I do agree that the so-called anti-American sentiment is over dramatized. At least some sectors still claim to want American tourism, even if they have an issue with tariffs.
What on earth are you talking about? Canada is wide open to American tourists! You will find us warm and welcoming unless of course you are wearing a red ball cap and insist on telling us how inferior we are.

Yep! Children in Montreal are learning profanities in both official languages.

I was in Montreal during the Referendum. They don't like you guys. And, they don't like English. Especially on menus.

Well, hopefully the above is still true. Not sure though after some of the hate we read here.
are wearing a red ball cap and insist on telling us how inferior we are.
Irony.

My local supermarket, part of the largest chain in Canada, has enthusiastically embraced the boycott with signs clearly identifying Canadian products.

Earlier this spring they donated strawberries to local food banks because customers wouldn't buy the US fruit. They now stock strawberries from Mexico.

Liquor store shelves are still bereft of US alcohol products as the Province of Ontario imposed a 100% boycott.

So you're not mad at Carney for cutting regulations anymore?

Yeah, this has definitely been a regrettable disaster for the U.S. Canada is the one country that nobody in the U.S. can invent a plausible beef with.

Six months ago, we had a trusted friendly and trade was great. Why would you slap a tariff on Canadian aluminum when we can't economically produce it ourselves? It was like slapping a tariff on a domestic industry.

I find myself in the weird position of rooting against the American economy here, because economic pain is about the only thing that voters here respond to.

What on earth are you talking about? Canada is wide open to American tourists! You will find us warm and welcoming
I never suggested otherwise. It was some of your own Canadian cohorts that suggested: Americans may no longer be welcome in Canada. Oh, and there is that Canadians booed the American national anthem at a hockey game. I would never disrespect the Canadian anthem in that way. I have always treated it with respect when Canadian teams visited the US.
unless of course you are wearing a red ball cap and insist on telling us how inferior we are.
So, what you are suggesting is that Americans are welcome and safe as long as they are not wearing a MAGA hat? That's extreme. I will keep my distance.
