The way the scientist talked about how they would present their finding to those with power is where the scandal started, and the deniers said that numbers were changed to add more weight. The only thing wrong with "climategate" was the way the info was to be presented, which was in a hyperbolic way in order to give more weight to what they had found because most people don't understand the severity of a few degrees.
