Sabine Hossenfelder exposes the ugly reality

The video was about particle physics but it can also apply to climate change. I'm a curious guy, so I don't mind pumping some money to find an answer, it's when we start throwing the big bucks at a 'nonsense' problem then it's a problem. I should also point out the we spend billions on space telescopes and most taxpayers are very happy with the results they see. So not all science is bad, just the fake sciences. If we can figure out which ones they are.

I am an enthusiastic layman in science, chiefly space travel and astrophysics, but also very interested in advancements in particle physics and cosmology, and technology.
I've also been aware for a long time that SCIENCE is not some holy priesthood full of selfless truth-seekers, but a human institution populated and run by humans.... therefore flawed. Research funding is a huge draw for corruption and ego.
I've seen innumerable articles "New studies reveal secrets of the universe!".... or the cure for cancer or heart attacks, and so on.... and waited for follow ups and progress or major revolutions in how we live our lives.... and often got nada. Years later I'll see a reference I saved to some new science or technology and do a search on it, and it has gone nowhere or disappeared entirely. Disappointing.

A few do result in important new knowledge, and a few of those do have a positive effect in the real world... but the percentage is very low it seems.

This seems like a pretty good explanation of why.

If we define science, that’s just another way China will surpass us.

Random loony is loony on youtube.

*yawn*

Looked at the (non-peer reviewed) paper.

Sounds like someone didn't get tenure and they got all salty about it.

Looking at her bio, her last great scientific work was "Do human beings have souls."

Sabine is right, as she usually is. Sadly, a lot of modern science operates in this way. There are people doing good work, but there are also plenty of careerists who just care about their paycheck.

I don't want to be too harsh because I realize scientists have bills to pay just like everyone else, but it's not good for scientific progress or the production of knowledge that this is how much of our modern academic/government grant system works.
