The Reckoning: big oil execs to face congressional hearings on decades of deliberate, systematic campaigns of public disinformation on climate change

"For many years, there has been absolutely no question in the scientific community that climate change is happening, that it is mostly caused by human activity, and that it is potentially catastrophic"

If your first statement were true, how do you explain climate change when there were very few humans inhabiting this planet and there were no fossil fuels being burned?
I'd like to see how they plan to make a claim that the energy companies tried any coverup.

How does this justify lying by the fossil fuel industry?
Prove they lied.

We have a news outlet that lies all the time, claiming the energy companies engaged in coverups and lied, and you believe it?

Wow...

"We're committed to a one to two percent annual reduction of production of fossil fuels."

Wow, that's quite the commitment.
Considering population growth, it is.

Listen to the hearings. You’ll find out what the documents show they knew vs what they were saying (and even more interestingly, NOT saying).

I’m sorry you fell for their scam. It can happen to the best of us.
You mean you don't know, but are towing the line anyway?

Can anyone say "lemming?"

There were a lot of Republicans fighting "SOCIALISM!" If we can't destroy what's left of Earth's ecosystems, that's "SOCIALISM!"

A lot of Republicans also said "INSANITY!" If we can't destroy what's left of Earth's ecosystems, that's "INSANITY!"

How does this justify lying by the fossil fuel industry?
Please explain their lies. I'm not aware of any. They have been or record that their products produce greenhouse gasses.

Please humor me. What specifically are their lies?

Subjective means many people can look at the same data and reach a different conclusion!
In this case the data itself has large range, if you add to that the range of the different emission scenarios, and the range in how sensitive the climate is to added CO2, and you do not end up with a black and white result.
I.e there are no idiots, just scientists with different opinions.

And opinions are not facts.

WTF is wrong with the demonrats in congress? The oil execs never tried to downplay the effects of their products.

“Downplay” is not the right word. “Lie” or “engage in a systematic campaign of misinformation and cover-up” is more like it.

You must be unaware of the slew of new information coming out which are the spur for all the new questions. This is a rapidly evolving story- and it’s not looking good for the oil execs.

And opinions are not facts.

This is no longer opinion- but Ben by the scientists at Exxon. All the scientific papers now coming out, 100% of them, accept anthropogenic climate change and its potential danger as a foundational scientific fact.

Even the scientists at Exxon Mobile agree this is something potentially catastrophic and not something just to be blown off. That’s pretty black and white.

Here's the link to C-SPAN's coverage of the six hour hearing yesterday.
At time mark 2:14:00 Rep. Byron Donalds Accuses Committee Chair Maloney...

Here's the You Tube starting at Rep Donalds' testimony.

That's meaningless.

How can anyone think these democrats have any honor?

They don't care about honor. Power, money & celebrity is what counts for them.

And Republicans don’t care about their own grandchildren. Only their own short term greed and self-interest.

Haha. Here’s some Republican honor for ya: they think the very act of questioning these executives’ decades long campaigns of gaslighting, public misinformation, and propaganda is violating their first amendment rights:

“ Conversely, in an emotional tirade earlier in the hearing, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) argued that Democrats’ questioning of the oil executives itself amounted to a violation of the companies’ First Amendment rights. Donalds added that Oversight Chairwoman Carolyn B. Maloney’s (D-N.Y.) requests of oil companies were “disgusting.””

Ok, factor this. We destroy our economy in an effort to reduce emissions to zero, while the rest of the world continues to pollute at will. We suffer the consequences without changing a damn thing. Please tell me how you get Russia, China, and India to comply.
Let's worry about us and let them figure it out. We have an obligation to our planet. It's the only one we've got. It's not going to ruin our economy to use alternative sources when we can. The US is the 2nd highest in emissions.

There was one scientist who sent an internal memo saying that increased CO2 could cause warming. The question of if AGW is a problem is still a very open question!

I am sure you mean Human Caused climate change,
but for the sake of argument, why would such an opinion about a such a subjective topic be counted as a lie?
Consider that the IPCC AR6 SPM says,

and 1000 GtCO2 is about 127 ppm of increase, a little less than the 135 observed increase in CO2.
If we look at the warming that doubling the CO2 level (280 ppm), then the IPCC's numbers would place it at a range of between .6C and 1.38C,
with a best estimate of .99C. That .99C would be spread over 160 years, and would look like warming we have all been experiencing for our entire lives.
Add to that, the observed warming is mostly in the winter and evening lows, and yes, it would be a honest opinion to say it is nothing to worry about.
:ROFLMAO:

Just so everyone knows... that best estimate didn't come from the IPCC. That is long's denialist imagination at work.

Oh... and that "mostly" is really a little more than half.

That is why it is a direct quote from the AR6 SPM!

Really? I'm not talking about your quote. Quote the best estimate of .99C line and provide specific information on where it is.
