Let's face it...the elephant in the room. Which is that the REAL problem of the cancellation of former policies is that the NEW ones are not good substitutes. The new ones have skimpy provider lists AND are way too expensive.
Finally, I heard an ACA architect on tv finally reference the fact that the new policies WILL be more expensive for healthy people. Really? Funny...I didn't hear Obama tell the public that when this bill was being passed. That many people would have to pay MORE for the new policies.
If people could get similar coverage at affordable costs, the cancellation of the old policies wouldn't matter.
The administration and its spokespersons and ACA supporters repeat over and over that the old policies were substandard and the new ones are SO much better! Well...if you can't afford something, that doesn't really matter, does it? A Lexus might be a better car than another one, but if you can't afford a Lexus, that doesn't matter.
Second....it's not TRUE that all the new policies are better than all the old policies. It's simply not true. Look at a reasonably priced old policy (www.ehealthinsurance.com...click on "benefits summary," and click on "Find A Provider" to locate providers near you). Then look at the lowest priced NEW policies for 2014 for your area. Look at the benefits summary and see what all the new coverages are that you'll get THAT YOU WILL NEED OR USE. Forget about "reasonably priced" new policies. They don't exist. But pay special attention to the "Find A Provider" list for providers near you. If you are like me, a check on the lowest priced new policies will show that there is only ONE gynecologist within 10 miles of me (I'm guessing that's someone desperate for patients....and trying to get an appt and driving 10 miles away will be a problem for many...and since it's a foreign name, s/he may not even speak English). Just one gynecologist. There are several internal medicine drs, most of whom don't speak English. Try to get an appt with the two who do. And I would still have to drive far to get there. But the fact is that NONE of my doctors accept those lowest cost policies. None. Not one drs' name that I recognize. No respected, established doctor will have anything to do with those lowest policies.
THAT MAKES THE NEW POLICIES SUBSTANDARD in actual practice, although they may look good on the surface. But even for the higher priced ones that respected doctors will accept, the cost is prohibitive. They are WAY more expensive than the old policies that provided the coverage the insured need. The new ones have HIGH DEDUCTIBLES, providing no coverage for anything other than serious medical conditions.
In other words, if you are very sick, with a chronic expensive condition, or if you get cancer or something expensive to treat, only then will your very expensive NEW policy cover you. And that's only if you opt for the ones you can't afford, since almost no providers will accept the lowest cost ones.
The new policies are substandard in actual practice. Not the old ones. The reverse is true of what the ACA hawkers are repeating all over tv all day. People who don't check the facts are falling for the lie. Listen...listen to see if they point to anything that can be verified.
I've told you where to go to check out specific policies and compare them. The facts are there.
