It is the bane of many female subway riders. It is a scourge tracked on blogs and on Twitter.And it has a name almost as distasteful as the practice itself.
It is manspreading, the lay-it-all-out sitting style that more than a few men see as their inalienable underground right.

What's worse than "manspreading"


It's being a "manspreading lumbersexual" these days!


(yes, fake new yorkers, are now dressing like fake lumberjacks and manspreading on our subways!!!!)

What should be done?
 
Subway seats are uncomfortable.

Could you imagine writing an article about fat women taking up two seats because they're fat disgusting women and what the backlash would be on that one?

NYT article says: "While there are women who take up more than their share of space, the offenders are usually men."

Being fat doesn't equal disgusting. That's pretty rude of you.

The phrase "manspreading" sounds repulsive.

The last time I was in a subway.....was in Atlanta, 5 years ago on layover between Basic and AIT....and the 4 of us stood with our bags between our feet.

Not sure of that counts.

There are lots of men who find big women attractive. They could be overweight from a medical condition. It isn't ok to label fat people disgusting. They find life hard enough as it is without the unfair generalization of disgusting. It's a prejudice some in society need to get over.
 
It is rude to take up two seats when it is preventable (e.g. when one is not very fat). I often see punk/thug types (always boys or men 13-27 years old, sometimes an older bum) intentionally hog two seats on public transit much more blatantly than what the manspreading picture depicts. I think they do it because they generally feel powerless and want to feel powerful for awhile. Depending on how dangerous they look, I often sit next to them since most people are too scared to try to do it. I try to avoid saying "excuse me" (they aren't really being asked for a favor, just to act like a decent person) instead I'll loom over them until they get the idea. The same should be done to the man spreaders who should not be allowed to impinge on your seat. Another offense is sitting on the outside seat on a crowded bus or train. That is usually done by young women who try to look glamorous. Again, I try to avoid saying "excuse me" instead I'll loom over them until they get the idea and move over, or at least let me get in to the inner seat. The ones who seem most arrogant might get 'accidentally' kicked a little when I have to climb over them to exit my window seat.

There are no words adequate to describe how low "manspreading" is on my personal list of the ills of the world. I mean, for all that is good and holy, people, get a ****ing grip!!
