The End of NATO

Have you asked Ukraine about that?
NATO is responsible for the death and destruction in Ukraine.

You see, NATO...even though their mandate for existence is long gone...cannot let go. So they've manufactured a reason to exist. (even though Ukraine isn't even a member of that organization)

@RF667799, thank you for the tip about the Pony Express. I have discovered just the tip of the iceberg by looking up what you gave me. The Pony Express was not only private, but short-lived. I may, at some point, want to read about its history. The history of the western United States was never my area of expertise, but this did bring back all the old cowboy movies and myths as well as actual history. It does not affect my views on NATO, but I really like being informed, so I appreciate your input. There are many well-educated posters on DP and it is great when they chime in.

How is NATO responsible for the death and destruction in Ukraine?

I've mainly been educated by hanging around for nearly 68 years. ;)

I think Russia is still a threat and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future.
Then shouldnt the NATO countries pony their asses up to the bar and pay for their preparedness and defense? Why would it take Trump drawing a line in the sand for that to happen?

NATO is attracting more and more countries; everyone wants to be a member of NATO, a dues-paying member. Ukraine wants to be. Now Sweden and Finland have shown that they, also, want to be. All these countries know that belonging to NATO takes a commitment of money and also of the lives of their young men. Do you know how many soldiers Denmark sent to support the United States in Afghanistan? I learned how many when Donald Trump was threatening Denmark over Greenland. Denmark deployed 9,500 troops to Afghanistan to aid the United States. It is ridiculous to reduce a country's contribution to NATO to dollars and cents and not include the blood and toil of the soldiers who fight for it on the side of NATO.

NATO is expanding because it is attracting more people.

Ending NATO is a scary step for Russia to feel emboldened towards conventional aggression.

NATO is responsible for the death and destruction in Ukraine.

Really? I thought it was the delusional Russian asshole in Moscow with 100 gallons of blood on his hands that was the cause of the murder and mayhem in Ukraine.

CT nonsense. Sounds like something Steve TWitkoff or Tucker Carlson would say.

Putin would have done nothing if NATO hadn't done their thing regarding Ukraine.

Everyone wants to hang with the cool kids...they just want their daddy to pay for everything.

By working toward bringing Ukraine into NATO.

Putin would have done nothing if NATO hadn't done their thing regarding Ukraine.

Putin has repeatedly and overtly stated his primary motivation for his actions towards Ukraine are because he thinks they should be considered part of Russia.

How so?

I watched the entire video. Where do you get the idea that it is "the end of NATO"? In fact...really...nothing has changed. Trumps position (one that echoes Obama's position) is that NATO must pay their fair share.

Why does that seems like such a foreign concept to you?

NATO members needs to wake up or just get in bed with Putin. They're dick tease dance with him is just making things worse.

If NATO is irrelevant, having lost its purpose to exist 35 years ago, then why would Putin care if Ukraine joined? It would seem Putin would have better spent is money on fine scotch and cigars to enjoy with his friends while laughing at Ukraine's stupidity rather then spend Russian lives and resources stopping Ukraine from joining an irrelevant organization. I am baffled.

European nations are used to America paying for NATO. They got away with not paying the agreed upon 2% of gdp for decades. Trump pushed it to 3 in his first term and said pay up or the U.S will not defend you. Now he's upped it to 5% which will help keep NATO strong. The Secretary General said Trumps insistence in raising the share to 3% provided almost a Trillion dollars of new money and the 5% mark will be additional money.

What makes NATO irrelevant?

You are right. NATO has 32 members. No one member, however important, has the right to close it down.

You guys are neutral and contribute nothing... right?
