I have read the Declaration of Independence many times. An interesting debate we could have about it is the partial enumeration of so-called "Rights." I believe Rights, as we understand the term, are not a birthright but are a collective political will, malleable and changing. The Declaration of Independence posits that they are a Creator's endowment. The problem I see with Rights being god-given is that means they belong to everyone regardless of nationality; they do not stop at the border.

I tend to put it as "rights are not God-given or inherent to anyone, they only exist when either you or someone else is able to fight for them for you and/or others, in various ways, to gain them, or for justice for those whom rights are taken and cannot be returned". From there, rights can be deviated further, but that is the basis of rights.
