There was once a serious campaign to relocate the US Capital from Washington, DC to St. Louis, MO. The justification was as America expanded westward, St. Louis offered a more central location to the entire country.

In the 1930s the state of Louisiana nearly went to civil war as Louisiana national guard troops under the command of Gov. Huey Long took up battle positions against city of New Orleans police in riot gear under the command of the Mayor of New Orleans. Within 2 days federal troops were deployed to keep the peace.

1.) After WW2, when the Federal Republic of (West-)Germany was about to be formed, there was a debate about the new national flag. One draft was inspired by the Scandinavian cross:

Not few Christian Democrats preferred this design, but eventually, the revolutionary-democratic black-red-gold of 1848 that had been used in Weimar too was chosen again.


2.) After the reunification of West- and East-Germany in 1990, the federal parliament had to decide whether the seat of government should remain in Bonn (which was the provisional capital of West-Germany) or should be moved to Berlin again. Finally, the parliament decided with 337 to 320 votes in favor of Berlin -- and Berlin would not have won without the support by the 17 MPs by the socialist Party of Democratic Socialism, the successor of the former communist state party of East Germany.
 
In the 1970's part of the UP of Michigan ceceded from the United States and formed a new nation. They wanted to be made part of Wisconsin (logical) but the Lansing people said no so they left.

At one time the area just north of Chicago was part of Wisconsin as was part of NE Iowa.

Columbus did not discover America, Asians did followed by several other races. The "vikings" were late comers.

Columbus never even visited what people think of first when they think "America". Columbus actually was the fist European to discover the Caribbean islands. On his first voyage; The Bahamas, Cuba and Hispaniola (Haiti and The Dominican Republic). In later voyages he visited Central and South America but never North America.

This tidbit ruins the fun but the individual teams are for profit businesses however with the possible exception of the Green Bay Packers, which under a unique arrangement is owned by the citizens of the City of Green Bay. The league they belong to, the NFL is non-profit.

In the early 1800's The north shore of Lake Pontchartrain (in Louisiana) was part of Spain.
The southern shore was the city of New Orleans in the US.
The customs duties were waved, and brisk trade of bricks and timber was conducted
across the lake. Almost all of the bricks for the streets of New Orleans came from...Spain.
