don't know where to put this so:

what is the "Thanks" system. I can guess, but I don't really know. Also I notice that I have 1, what does this mean if anything?

Folks can click on it to give the poster a "thanks for an excellent post".

It's just a simple positive acknowledgment of your contribution.

In your USER CP you can see what posts you've been "thanked" for.

I love the "Thanks" button.
It shows which arguments are getting through to which people. It's awesome.
Plus, it's easier to just "thank" somebody than to post just to say "I agree" or "Well said" or something equally banal.

but saying "I agree" a whole bunch of times gives yo a ridicously high postcount.

(pc+1)

...could there be a counter for how many times you thank others? Or who you're thanking? If you're an ingratiating smarm-ball who thanks everyone who agrees with you, or if you're thanking idiots and idiots get thanks, that says something about you, but...I don't see how being thanked is relevant to your info. But then...I don't use the "mood" thing either.

EDIT:
Oh...I just noticed it DOES say how often you thank....that may be interesting.

2nd EDIT:
I also just checked to see if you can see what posts a member has thanked, but it only records the posts the member has had thanked. I think the other info would be more interesting--who they are thanking.

How about a "crap" button to go along with the "thanks" button, and a readout to show how many times a poster has been "crapped" on? Just kidding.

oh no! It would be horribly embarassing--I'd have more "crapped on" dings than actual posts!:doh

BTW--lovely that that should come from someone with the screen name danarhea...

Might split that into two words. ;)

Then it becomes more apparent what his screen name is.

There is a 'groan' button available, but I agree with Felicity - not good. Positive feedback is always so much better in a serious discussion environment.

In education, one of the current buzz-concepts is to be careful of the easily bruised psyche of the adolescent. Never mind that in the real world, bosses don't care if the employee has their feelings hurt. They just want the job done.

Just making conversation! ;)

But I agree that in an adult, text oriented arena, positive exchanges will result in more engaging discussion.

p.s. my spell checker keeps telling me that vauge is spelled wrong :2razz:
