An 18-year-old man in Texas was arrested after he allegedly stormed through a hospital nursery and began strangling newborns and assaulting staff members.
Law & Crime reports that Marcus Dewayne McCowan Jr was charged on Monday with several felonies, including two counts of attempted first-degree capital murder.
The Odessa Police Department detailed the incident in a press release. According to the department, officers responded to an incident at the Odessa Regional Medical Centre in Texas after staff at the hospital reported that a man had "forced his way into the nursery and began assaulting patients and staff."

What the hell?? How do you force your way into a nursery? Every newborn nursery /NICU I worked in was controlled through card, digital cypher lock, or gatekeeper access.

"The man then allegedly began staring at a mother and her newborn, and later shoved nurses to the ground and tried to gain access to a nursery, which was locked. When that did not work, he allegedly grabbed the mother's newborn and fled into a lactation room, where he reportedly began strangling the baby."

From another article:

McCowan then entered the nursery, where a respiratory therapist saw him grab an infant girl by the neck and say “die” before seemingly moving to throw her on the ground, KMID noted. The therapist managed to slowly bring McCowan down to the floor, so as not to hurt the newborn, and stayed with them until authorities arrived, the outlet continued.

I decided to check multiple links to see if this was a legit article.

Wow, just wow. The article doesn't mention about the status of the newborn that was choked. I hope that newborn is ok. That person that choked the newborn belongs behind bars the rest of his life.

Probably not going to jail. This sounds like a mental health and/or drug issue.

That’s really messed up.

Why is this country so infested with loonies?

Bad drugs make people do some really strange things.

However, I have never really supported "self-induced intoxication" as a rational defence.

This is carrying late term abortions much too far*

Somebody get that kid to a shrink; but lock him up in the meantime

* apologies for the gallows “humor“

According to the article, his girlfriend was there, and the first baby was leaving the hospital (with mom). He 'eventually' forced his way into the nursery - no details, but it's possible he could have grabbed the door when someone else opened it.

I'm just surprised he ran amok for so long. Given that we're talking about infants, you would think that would be open season for anyone around to intervene with the first baby- tackling or hitting him over the head with a fire extinguisher - anything - until security could get there.

two counts of attempted murder, so hopefully he was unsuccessful, and the babies will quickly recover.

Texas, definitely going to Jail. does sound like a mental health issue for sure. I candy imagine actually trying to hurt a newborn...

Why is this country so infested with loonies?
Many reasons. High incidence of absent fathers, drugs, our decision to leave loonies out in the street rather than putting them in asylums.... :(

Thanks Reagan

Good point, because it's not like that was 30+ years ago, or there were ever Democrats in control of any Federal or State government at any time since then.

Why is this country so infested with loonies?
because it is so infested with people who can procreate without having the ability to parent and support the children they bring into this world

and with reduced access to abortions, this problem will only worsen

there are exceptions, but for the most part, those with means and education tend not to have a lot of children. those who are impoverished and with a weak education/skill set are inclined to have more children than they are unable to care and parent: 66 children per 1000 women for those having an income < $10,000 vs 44 for those who have incomes of $200,000

Yep it is a fail on both sides for sure. people say they want to do something about the homeless problem, which this contributes significantly to, but they don't want to spend the money on something they do not get a direct benefit from.

there is another aspect
among the homeless, word of assistance ... soup kitchen, showers, clothing, Obama phones, transit passes, gets out real fast

if you want to spend your community tax dollars helping the homeless with housing, that is a gracious undertaking. but do not believe that will mitigate your homeless problem. in fact, i will predict that it will exacerbate it. once aware that there is free/accessible housing in some locale, your community will be overwhelmed with the homeless seeking to benefit from it

in no way am i recommending against it. but it would be folly to engage in such a community effort without acknowledging this reality

How much you want to bet he has a long juvenile rap sheet and wasn’t in prison as an adult because of some leftist “equity” program

Apparently this Texas hospital has a rather lackadaisical approach to security.

Hospitals open to the general public during the day are generally not practically capable of having strict security. Full on security with weapons screening and access control is manpower intensive (think of how many TSA agents and police officers are used to secure an airport) and slows hospital procedures. Most hospitals are easy access. The hospital near my home in California has an excellent cafeteria and I often go there just for lunch with no other business. It’s pretty open too

You raise a good point, but that can be addressed with a few guidelines, and a little "tough love." The offering has to be:

1. Not optional (i.e., we shouldn't be letting people sleep on the street when we are providing an alternative).
2. Not that attractive. It should be better than a urine-soaked tent in front Chipotle, but definitely not an $800k condo or a hotel room. That way, people who are able to provide for themselves will still choose to do so.

Why is this country so infested with loonies?
Mixed reasons
Drugs
alcohol
lack of parenting skills
lack of parents in home
violent society (movies, TV, video games all glorify extreme violence)
lack of education
lack of a quality education
lack of resources for mentally I’ll folks to get help
