Texas high school sends Black student back to in-school suspension over his locs hairstyle

Luckily for us we can look up the dress code.

Seems a little ambiguous in some instance like "ribbons worn in good taste" and how much stricter it is for the boys than the girls.

I am mostly interested to see if what the kid said was true, that other boys have longer hair violating the code and are not called out on it.

In reading the article it sounds like his hair was out of compliance when it was down, not when he took steps to keep it up. Sounds to me like he had a choice and chose to defy the code.

This is absurd. Every child is special and precious and under no circumstances should we expect them to comply with rules and regulations. Rules are merely a form of oppression not far removed from slavery and the only logical reason this school district is preying on this poor child is because they hate black people.

Did I get all that right?
It's nonsense.

Nobody is saying that.

Can't have that can we? It's like the late 60's all over again down there. :(

I think the principal should be fired. The harassment needs to stop.
This is either state or county. They have been passing restrictive laws there.

At some point, presumably, these kids are going to be out in the real world having to cope with real world situations. If they don't learn a little discipline BEFORE they get out in the workforce they'll have a MUCH harder time when the chips are down and they have to make a living.

Because he did not conform to the hair standards he needs to be disciplined. Why, so he can become a more obedient wage slave later in life? Sorry, that's too Orwellian for me to accept.

I had to wear my hair style a specific way for 20 years to satisfy the Navy Department which was often controlled by democrats.

Where the **** where you when I didn't feel like sitting in the ship's barber chair?

More Jack hack nonsense.
This kid is not under the UCMJ.

There is no need for a "hair" dress code. That is some 60s bullshit that needs to go away.

its not your school or community is it? they decide, not you

Do you really think the school board, which is made up of GQP talibangelicals, is going to do right by this student?

I think they should treat everyone equally and fairly

I want the State of Texas to follow the Crown Act and cease their racist behavior.

its not racist - every student has to follow the dress code

"Thou shalt conform." Nice to know you are on the 'side' of a dictatorial culture. Read 1984.

I fully support dress codes - it keeps everyone equal and fairly treated

i fully oppose school officials dictating hair styles.

But if they are going to get into dictating hairstyles they should at least be creative and unique and require every single student to have this hair style.

The behavior is racist. It needs to stop. Stop defending it.

Indeed. They should not be harassing people because of their hairstyle.

Yet the only student being targeted is African-American.

its none of that but you have to have your race card today I guess and you believe it ??

whatever - if they're breaking the rules they need to be sent home. This student did, end of story, period

you want to defend someone breaking the rules because they want to - tough. I hope he has to retake his Sr year or get a GED for the stupidness of it all. Adhere to the rules of go home

the end

So hateful.

This is a state that had some issues of this type that a law had to be created to keep people in check.

You are free to live in denial if you wish.

No offense to either side of this…”issue”…but we have bigger things to worry about than this.

A Texas high school sent a Black student back to in-school suspension Tuesday for refusing to change his hairstyle, renewing a monthslong standoff over a dress code policy the teen’s family calls discriminatory.

The student, Darryl George, was suspended for 13 days because his hair is out of compliance when let down, according to a disciplinary notice issued by Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas. It was his first day back at the school after spending a month at an off-site disciplinary program.

George, 18, already has spent more than 80% of his junior year outside of his regular classroom.

This is ridiculous. There's nothing wrong with this boy's haircut.

This is that school's basketball team. A few there have longer hair.

treating everyone equally and fairly with dress code is hateful ?

I am all for equal treatment. I am against people being punished because they wear their hair in the traditional cultural fashion. The school does not have the right to ban people from wearing culture-based hairstyles. The school needs to stay away from sticking its nose in the cultural affairs of others.

I wonder how they'd handle a Hasidic Jewish, Indigenous or Indian person with long hair.

...George’s latest suspension follows three months of disciplinary action for violating the school district’s dress code, which states a male student’s hair cannot be worn in a style “that would allow the hair to extend below the top of a t-shirt collar, below the eyebrows, or below the ear lobes when let down."....

Sounds as if the hair doesn't have actually have to be worn "down". It simply has to be long enough (even when piled on top of the head) that it could "extend below the top of a t-shirt collar, below the eyebrows, etc."
