Texas Governor Rick Perry to host prayer summit that calls upon Jesus to solve America’s problems
Texas Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed August 6 as a "Day of Prayer and Fasting for our Nation to seek God's guidance" and has invited governors from across the nation to join his Christian prayer summit at Reliant Stadium in Houston.
"Given the trials that beset our nation and world, from the global economic downturn to natural disasters, the lingering danger of terrorism and continued debasement of our culture, I believe it is time to convene the leaders from each of our United States in a day of prayer and fasting, like that described in the book of Joel," Perry said in a statement released Monday.
"I urge all Americans of faith to pray on that day for the healing of our country, the rebuilding of our communities and the restoration of enduring values as our guiding force."
On the website for the prayer summit, Perry added that Americans "must come together and call upon Jesus to guide us through unprecedented struggles" because " some problems are beyond our power to solve."
I'm not certain how I feel about this. It seems harmless, but it also seems divisive, and dare I say a bit political for a guy who is thinking about running for President.
It is certainly disingenuous to say "some problems are beyond our power to solve." Has the United States truly done all it can to solve the problems Perry seems to be talking about? No, of course not. Granted wildfires and epic floods, maybe there isn't much we can do. Economic downturn had nothing to do with natural acts and, more importantly Washington seems less than willing to do much of anything to keep Wall Street from raping America.
The lingering danger of terrorism would not have been the issue it is and will be if America doesn't stay the hell out of other nations. We are very much to blame and the U.S. foreign policies of decades past as well as foreign policies today cannot be dismissed as just. Apply the golden rule, honestly, and we might see it differently.
As the governor of all citizens of Texas I wonder why Perry has decided only to involve Christian Texans while effectively telling the rest of the state to kiss off.
