Teacher fired by Texas Christian school for attending drag show

No, the school was not correct.

What she does in her personal life is not their business. When this goes to court, the school will be paying out.

Given the fact that she has been employed for 19 years gives her some SERIOUS leverage.

The administrator responsible for this will likely be handing in their resignation.

Do you feel the same about that Karen that called the cops on a black guy in Central Park? She was on her own time, yet she was fired.

People on the right and left have been fired, reprimanded, etc. for what they do on their own personal time. Sad times.

"A veteran teacher was fired by a private Christian school in Texas for attending a drag show in her own time and posting about in on social media. Leaders of the First Baptist Academy in Baytown ruled that Kristi Maris, a teacher at the school for 19 years, had breached a condition of employment requiring her to “act in a godly and moral fashion at work, on Facebook and in my community”.

Maris told ABC13 of Houston she agreed to the condition, but did not realize it prevented her attending a drag show, or sharing photographs or videos of it. In a Facebook post, she said the entertainment was “a blast”. A co-worker who joined her at the show, hosted at Hamburger Mary’s, a popular drag venue and bar in downtown Houston, was also fired.

...“They’re entertainers. We were in disbelief. We still are. We were heartbroken. We had relationships with parents and the kids, and I didn’t even get to say goodbye to a lot of the kids.” Maris said she was a devoted Christian and taught her students that God loved them all equally. “We should love everybody, and that’s what we’ve been teaching, but they’re expecting us not to do that,” she said."

She taught her students that God loves everybody. Sounds suspicious.

The school, of course, is free to do as it likes, but firing a 19 year veteran over this seems harsh. (Cue those who want to question her record)

Private institution, so private institution's rules, however stupid they are. I think the school missed the point of her attending, but maybe they didn't miss the point and just think that merely associating with them is sacrilege.

But that brings me to think about Jesus himself: would Jesus have avoided people who commit sin, or would Jesus have engaged with them with the aim of perhaps persuading them to stop sinning? Would Jesus of the Bible have completely condemned them or would he nevertheless try to save them in spite of their perceived flaws? The teacher seems to be the real Christian in this case, not the school.

I do believe that private institutions, especially religious ones should be able to have these clauses in their rules, regardless of how stupid and unfair I find them to be. I don't like or think its fair that the teacher was fired, but I don't think that she would win a case against the school for this.

That being said, this is a good reason, in my opinion, why these schools should not be eligible ever for public funding(like voucher programs or as my state calls them, "education scholarships"), because they are given the ability to make these unfair decisions in employment and even attendance. I'm willing to bet they'd be allowed to, and likely would, expel a student for the same "offense", which is complete BS.

These aren't comparable.

First, the woman in Central Park did commit a crime and many places will fire you for committing crimes, even being suspected of committing one. Second, the woman in Central Park also was caught on film doing something that a lot of people in the US, NY, likely including some of her employers' clients, would find to be wrong and not something they would want to associate with.

When it comes to what the teacher did, she just went to a show. Not sure how they found out (likely posts on social media or her sharing w/ someone who told/mentioned it), but what she did, going to a drag show, isn't something illegal nor even something most people would find reprehensible (reasonable person). Most reasonable people wouldn't fire someone for watching Friends, All in the Family, Hairspray (movie or play), being in the Navy and going through a crossing the line initiation (either side), or many other things that feature drag.

There is a difference between Gods love and what God accepts as proper. Maybe you are familiar with , "love the sinner, hate the sin". God may love you but if you are not a born again Christian you aren't getting into heaven.
If you agree to play by a set of rules, you better obey the rules. A Christian school will always place a tighter moral code of conduct on it's employees. You sign the contract you are agreeing to it.
I wonder if this person would tell kids it's ok to have an adulterous affair on their spouse?
What is sinful about watching male entertainers who wear women's clothes?

What is sinful about watching male entertainers who wear women's clothes?

There isn't anything sinful about watching it.

The school is punishing people because the school does not like drag queens.

It's simply one party forcing religious belief on another.

It's a losing proposition for them. If anything, that requirement is not possible in any real sense.

This was REALLY poor decision making on the part of an administrator, who in all likelihood, will be "resigning" before this situation is rectified.
The Administrator probably has some interesting skeletons in his closet too.

2 things.

1-It violated their rules.
2-You people are so warped by your petty bigotry that you actually pretend to give a shit about this.

thats.....hilarious....
We know that so-called religious schools are nothing but hypocritical.

Draconian theocracy at work, but it's a private school. They often have oaths of conduct for staff and students that extend beyond campus/working hours. If the requirements are too onerous then seek employment elsewhere.

Sideline: I admit to having done so for years, but anymore I have no idea why anyone posts anything about their lives on social media, even if the accounts are private.

I'm not sure they'll lose. Private schools aren't bound by public school rules.

The standard they set is unachievable by any living person. For this reason, the school is going to lose. In any event, an administrator is going to be "resigning" due his/her conduct in this case.

That is not how it works. You have Free Will to make choices... but if something like a flood happens and you did not use Free Will to not be there in the first place or to save yourself and you drown, it was God's Will.

God's Will.
So this free will thing only pertains to some things… I love how people pick and choose from the Bible. And when there is an earthquake, do you think those people have free will to make choices but then again, you can say it is God‘s will. Sure makes God a sadist.

Surprise, surprise. Another dishonest click-bait thread headline.

What that woman did was a criminal offense.

The teacher in question merely sought out entertainment.
Does everyone who commits a criminal defense get fired from their job?
Yes, it's comparable - to the point that what you do on your own time is not your employers business.

Surprise, surprise. Another dishonest click-bait thread headline.

That she posted about it is irrelevant.

The school punished her because she did something they did not like. This is not appropriate and it's not legal.

Wait....you are comparing the two as if they are somehow similar in your mind? LOLOLOLOL

This bull shit holier then thou violation of her basic civil rights outside work hours in an attempt to control how she thinks and behaves speaks loudly to the cult agenda such self appointed righteous gentiles engage in and I would state reflects the very heart of the Trump Maga world which clings to these sad attempts to control a world around them they feel is a direct threat to them and their way of life.

They should burn her at a stake for her transgression. I bet you dollars to doughnuts she is a tramp, i.e., wears lacy underwear. Its not just going to drag shows you know..its also:

excessive enjoyment of vibrations:

wearing form fitting clothes

playing tickle under the table with those drag queens

LET US STOP IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eh..it is a private school and she signed a contract. Even though it reads fairly open ended.

On the other hand at least she wasn't praying on the 50 yard line.

Why did she call the police?
