I'm hoping that nobody will have at the table a hyper-partisan or proselytizer who can't stifle him or herself for just one day, but I read about this woman headed home a day or so ago and realized that that there are going to be some stories to tell. From Twitchy.com:

We can’t recall ever having heard of Jen Winston before, but she’s got a blue checkmark so she must be someone special. According to her Twitter bio, ‘writer, speaker, unlearner’ Jen prefers the pronouns “she/her.” But we’d prefer to think of her as just “that insufferably woke person no one wants to be around.” We’re basing that on this tweet about how she’s preparing for the family Thanksgiving: Jen Winston on Twitter: "My mom: “Don’t forget to pack something nice for thanksgiving!”

Me:… "

"Decolonize your bookshelf"?!

Well, at the end of the day, just push back.

Such types will freak out and leave, and the rest of the family can enjoy their time together.

"Decolonize your bookshelf"?!

Currently, my bookshelf is colonized by dust bunnies......I am so "unwoke".

Apparently a bunch of people on twitter freaked out. I mean, how dare she have opinions!

I'm not sure it was the opinions people were commenting about. Likely the judgement she intended to vocalize.

So, as I wrote, I'd let her offer them, shame her to her face for being such a jerk, and then cross my fingers she left, so the rest of the people could enjoy each others company.

It's not that; it's the idea, whatever your political lean or cause, that you're going home for Thanksgiving with the expressed intent of annoying others, and she did say early on that she's got her mom in training (to be woke) and that mom is coming along and later that this tweet was mainly to annoy white people.

Anyway, my point isn't whether Jen Winston is "woke" or what her politics are; it's the intention of being an ass. One person who responded posted "Family meal is Wild Turkey to get through Thanksgiving," and that's what I was getting at. In my family my baby sister and I used to call this "defensive drinking."

I'm sitting here bored today hoping there's a mass shooting somewhere at a Thanksgiving family dinner .Something to amuse me between football games.

You'll post just anything for attention, won't you?

I'm responding only because I'm the OP. I hope that nobody takes your pitiable bait.

Nothing in her suitcase nor tweet judged anyone. Projection much?

Having opinions is being a jerk now?

If what you hope for was granted, the void would be filled.

Happy Thanksgiving.

LOL

Try to keep it real.

Didn't say anything about having an opinion. Pushing them in someone's face, as it appeared that was the plan, is something else.

Nothing she said implied that she was intending to annoy anyone. Maybe people should take responsibility for their own emotional reactions. It is amazing watching people of all political persuasions blame people of other ideologies for their own emotional reactions. Instead of being triggered by someone you know exactly nothing about because some blog told you that you where supposed to be, you could try relaxing and enjoying life.

I am keeping it real. I am not the one triggered about what some person I know nothing about posted on twitter about a situation I know nothing about. You on the other hand...

I fondly remember all the things I wanted to train my mother on.

"Decolonize your bookshelf"?!

There will be no discussion of politics or religion at our Thanksgiving table tonight. We'll just be be drinking and gorging ourselves on all kinds of fattening foods so that we can all rush to the gym tomorrow with the rest of the guilty.

I sit with my son and daughter with their families.

90% of the talk is Navy, sports, fishing and other things local.

My 1/2 Filipino grandson will probably sitting right beside me, teaching me Tagalog the whole time. He's insisting that I learn the language.

Having opinions doesn't make one a jerk, but disrupting everyone else's good time could be a sign of an overblown ego. Knowing where and how to present opinions, that's class.

Sure you're triggered. Pretty much railing.

I simply noted that if this woke idiot went off at the Thanksgiving table, I'd get back in her face.

If she decided to then leave, that would allow the rest to enjoy each others company.

Whatever else you think I said is just the result of your emotional overreaction.

The problem with this thread is that her tweet comes across as tongue in cheek. Like there is a joke that we are not privy to. I am not going to waste any energy on a second of outrage over some tweet that hurts noone. One of the problems I think we have in this country(and probably other countries too) is that we spend so much time trying to find fault in others instead of worrying about what we can do better.

Redress, Jen Winston didn't imply that she was intending to annoy people; she stated it on her Twitter page. It's true that I read about the tweet and its pic of t-shirts she was going to wear at the one place of which I'm aware that focuses strictly on Twitter posts, but I read Winston's tweets for myself, and they made me think of how fraught the holidays are for so many. I even tried to find my fave Stuart Smalley on YouTube where he melts down and asks himself why he keeps going home and doing this to himself.

As for me, although I am enjoying life, I am definitely not relaxing, just resting here for a bit because my back is killing me from this marathon kitchen whackout, and I'm not done yet.

Oh, but they are out there, just waiting to pounce and steal the cranberry sauce.

They can have it. Cranberry sauce is a food of the devil.

I fondly remember all the things I wanted to train my mother on.

Thanksgiving is very hard for me because I remember my mother's fabulous spreads--the stiff napkins, beautiful tablecloths, the real silver...the yeast rolls, radish roses.... I'd cook my little heart out and make at least three dishes to drive the 100 miles to her house, thinking I was really helping. Now that she's gone, I realize what all I wasn't doing and apparently will never be able to do. She made the impossible look so effortless. :(

My hope for this thread was lighthearted.

Nota, my daughter who is fixing Thanksgiving dinner for her family today gave me a call this morning needing some cooking advice. She can certainly relate to you. She sounded a little frazzled. I helped her the best I could over the phone. She told me today " Mom you did this every year for the entire family and you made it look effortless." True story. She went on to say when she talked to her daughter she was wanting to know if her mom was making Grandma's sweet potatoes. Her son H asked, "are you making Grandma's cheesecake?" Her son R asked if she was making Grandma's "holiday" mashed potatoes ? Last year I stopped making the big holiday meals because it was getting to be too much. The family had really grown in size. This year and last we went to our son's for Thanksgiving. Had a wonderful time. All I made was the orange cranberry sauce and brought some other things that were store bought. Food was good, got some good hugs and came home with leftovers. :) Circle of Life...….
