Sturgis rally linked to 15 Minnesota COVID-19 cases, including 1 hospitalization

It's only been a week folks. The virus takes 2-3 weeks to manifest itself. Just give it time.
Ah...so you mean the 15 people may NOT have been infected at Sturgis...just like the over 14285 Minnesotans?

Do you understand that it's a poor idea to gather in crowds during a pandemic? Let's hope that if Sturgis ends up being a spreading event, Sturgis inc. will be sued into bankruptcy.
Snce the Sturgus event is a voluntary gathering I would bet you would be hard pressed to sue over ANYTHING. And since 14,285 Minnesotans NOT connected to Sturgis in any way have got sick, you probably recognize how silly it is to **** yourself over 15 that MAY...MAY have been infected whole AT Sturgis...but also may just have likely contracted the disease at home.

But here I will give you props...you HAVE consistently spoken out about what you see as the stupidity of gathering in groups...even the protests. So you at least have shown consistency and integrity there.

I'd say this is great news if this is it as far as infections so far.

I think people on here aren't quite grasping how many people 250,000 is compared to 14 infections.

How this is a story but the millions of protesters over the course of months spreading the virus is not.

Not that I think the large protests are ok, but there was a lot of mask use and people a lot of the time were not crammed together - I looked at a lot of footage of the rallies and there was a great deal of mask wearing, not 6 feet apart....but not crammed together, either.

I think it is too early to tell - and we may never know the reality because of the fact that testing and tracking is not even close to being up to par in many areas.

No you seem to not get the basics. Bike rally or Walmart people with it are going to be spreading it to other people. It isn't like there were 250K people in a single room.

True. There are quite a few bars they went to.

They ****ed up by not canceling it. If it results in a lot of people getting sick because of the idiots who attended, the corporation behind it should be held liable.

Then lets way a few weeks before we have a panic attack thread like this.

Minnesota averaged so far in the month of August approx 650 (thats a low estimate...some days are well over 700) new cases a day. That means that in 22 days there have been 14,300 new cases of COVID in Minnesota...and 15 MIGHT be directly linked to Sturgis.

15 of 14,300

MIGHT be directly linked to Sturgis.

https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/stats/covidweekly34.pdf

You’re not real good as this stats thing.

15 are known to be from Sturgis. There probably are many, many more, and the downstream effect of those infections will never be known. But we know COVID grows exponentially.

Remember there were 15 cases in the US in late Feb? Bet you laughed at it then, too.

Because it doesn’t look like the protests were major spreading events.

I think this speaks to the incredible efficacy of being outdoors, and having most people wear masks or social distance.

Sturgis featured little mask wearing, lots of bars (which are known superspreader locations) and people staying overnight and eating in restaurants.

You won’t know in a few weeks, either.

Because no one is comprehensively tracking anyone of this, and contact tracing isn’t being done in very many places because the US has failed it’s people in managing this pandemic.

What I think Sturgis will eventually demonstrate is that we're all in this together and a national mask mandate is the right policy. What thre idiots in South Dakota do affects others.

Minn. officials expecting more COVID cases tied to Sturgis rally - StarTribune.com

"Thousands of people attended that event, and so it's very likely that we will see more transmission," said Kris Ehresmann, the state's director of infectious diseases

Fifteen Minnesotans who attended the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this month have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, including one state resident hospitalized with COVID-19, state health officials say.

The Minnesota Department of Health received the first case report on Thursday and 14 more case reports on Friday, said Kris Ehresmann, the state’s director of infectious diseases, during a briefing Friday with reporters. Minnesotans who tested positive visited multiple campgrounds and bars at the South Dakota event, Ehresmann said, so cases apparently can’t be connected to any one location.

Seven residents of North Dakota also have cases connected to the Sturgis event, a government spokesman told the Star Tribune.

“Thousands of people attended that event, and so it’s very likely that we will see more transmission,” Ehresmann said.

The 10-day Sturgis Motorcycle Rally drew more than 460,000 vehicles this year, according to state officials. In the days leading up to the event near Rapid City, health officials in Minnesota expressed concern about the potential for the virus to spread at large indoor/outdoor gatherings like the Sturgis rally.

South Dakota officials, on the other hand, encouraged the event in a state that doesn’t mandate the use of masks. There have been fewer than 25 cases associated with the rally, said Rebecca Piroutek of the South Dakota Department of Health in an e-mail.

The department has issued three public health notices thus far for business exposures related to the rally, Piroutek said. Notices are issued, she said, when an individual is unable to identify people they were in close contact with while able to transmit the virus.

Word of cases linked to Sturgis came as Minnesota reported eight more deaths from COVID-19 and a relatively high number of newly confirmed infections.

The Health Department reported a net increase of 825 new coronavirus cases, according to data released Friday morning, on a volume of 18,815 completed tests. In the past week, the state averaged 630 new cases per day on a volume of about 17,300 tests.

About 4% of tests have been coming back positive this week, which is a lower rate than Gov. Tim Walz has suggested might trigger further restrictions to control the spread of the novel coronavirus. But health officials are cautious about the relatively high number of new cases among people infected in the community without a known exposure — another key measure.

As expected, the Sturgis rally will become a mass spreading evnt.

LOL. California has over 4,000 new cases every day and yet the MSM want to highlight 15 cases due to the Sturgis rally?

That is one of the most egregiously idiotic statements I've read on this site. That's an accomplishment.

We've been at this for over 6 months and the thinking (of some) hasn't progressed in all that time.

1 hospitalization OMG!!!!

You do realize that if the people had not been there spreading it, they would have been somewhere else spreading it?

That's a fantastic example of simplistic, limited thinking, :lamo

Thanks for that.

If someone stays home, they arent spreading it. Are you claiming that individuals MUST leave their homes? Or must come in contact with others if they leave their home? :doh (Gee the trail I hiked the other day was empty except for me!...but I guess I was still 'spreading it!')

Esp. since many people are still staying home unless it's necessary otherwise, and are still attempting to maintain social distance.

This is the barely coherent and grammatically inept speech of a man who desperately wants to be able to claim that he "cured coronavirus."

That's it, in a nutshell. When we do get a handle on this crisis, he wants to be able to pull out footage and declare "I called it! I said use this! I said try this! I told them to do this, it was my idea!" He's just doing it with lots of stupid stuff because he doesnt want to miss an opportunity. He's afraid 'the big one' will be mentioned and he wont get credit for it.

It's all about declaring himself the savior of the cv crisis and we'll hear all about it, esp in his campaign. (Which is basically each of his press briefings these days) --- Lursa

You probably freak out drinking a cup of water so it's hard to take you serious.

If it was a cup of Flint,Michigan leaded tap water in late spring of 2014 I might freak out also.

Why do you deny facts? California has over 4000 new cases daily and 100-200 deaths daily (after two full months of having a mask mandate) and the MSM ignore that and report 15 cases from the Sturgis rally.

15 cases is like 1/10th of one of Cuomo's nursing homes, yet it's splashed writ large across the legacy media.

I don't buy that at all! The numbers in the US skyrocketed right when the riots started and now the numbers are coming down just as the riots are starting to slow down. These people met at bars and homes before and after. They drove in cars together. Contact tracers weren't allowed to ask them if they had been at a protest. Even Fauci indirectly said it was a bad idea for these knuckleheads to be out there. It's nonsense to condemn one gathering but not the other.

The BLM super spreaders where outdoors and they did wear masks mostly. They rarely social distanced and there were many more of them over a couple months than the inbreds up in Sturgis.

All people who attend gatherings right now should be rounded up.

So as long as you didn't hang out with people who go to biker bars you are probably safe.

As long as you didn’t hang out with people who knew people who knew people who were in contact with people who knew people who hung out at biker bars you’re safe.

You’re not real good at learning stuff, huh?

Because after five months, this should be freakin obvious.

South Dakota needs to be quarantined until they can get their **** together.

In other words, your fervent belief is better than the data.

I see why you were a Trumper.

People who don't know they have it think that magic mask has protected them and then go out to Walmart to get them some penny pencils for back to school.

You're welcome for your free introduction to Reality 101.

After 3 months the magic masks are a total abject failure. Blaming only trump supporters for not wearing them has been a failure. Blaming Hell's Angels for not wearing them will be a failure too. It must hurt your ego not to be able to tell people what they will and won't do.

You are the one who couldnt figure out reality until it was spelled out for him. Nobody was discussing masks or Walmart...you made a statement that positively declared that if those people didnt spread it in Sturgis, they would have spread it anyway elsewhere.

Welcome to me providing your free introduction to re-writing ideas for 3rd graders.
