U.S. city to experiment with ‘universal basic income’

Stockton to experiment with universal basic income.

The mayor of Stockton, California, is leading an experiment with “universal basic income,” which is set to start by giving low-income residents $500 a month, no questions asked.

Mayor Michael Tubbs calls his city “ground zero” for issues like wage stagnation, rising housing prices and loss of middle-class jobs that affect the nation.

Let us not forget that Stockton is bankrupt.

It would be cheaper to relocate families to areas where the jobs are if you consider the welfare cost. A $500 a month check means party time.

Yeah, I know if I made $6000 a year it would be nonstop hookers and cocaine.

The choice is yours.

why spend 500 more dollars instead of just not taxing that 500 dollars people earn to begin with.
then again this is CA and well they do stupid stuff on a daily basis.

i mean if you are a waiter better not pass out that straw or you might need that 500 bucks.

Not taxing $500 doesn't mean people take home $500 more. It means they take home $500*(tax rate) more.

Stockton, California (CA) poverty rate data - information about poor and low income residents living in this city

Stockton is a very poor community. As farm labor mechanized the labor stayed there and went on welfare. I'm sure most of the people will spend it wisely, but rent will magically go up and take half or all of it.

We need a constitutional way to bundle up the poor and plop them down in front of a job market. LOL

money received, especially on a regular basis, for work or through investments.

Stupid leftists...

and what happens when that well runs dry and the people you made dependent on it suddenly have to adjust their lifestyles to being broke again?

libs never consider consequences

just throw **** at the wall and see what happens, let someone else clean it up

And because that's what you personally would do, that's what you assume most others would do.

Don't get me wrong - I think the young mayor of Stockton is not going about this the best way, but should instead first look where it has been implemented and see what worked, and what didn't.

And this is important since the single biggest thing taking away our manufacturing jobs is NOT immigrants (illegal or otherwise) and is NOT unions...but automation. One area in England is looking at one-third of its jobs being lost to automation. When so many jobs are lost to automation, that means that there will be a point where there are simply no jobs to be had...but the people will still need an income.

Why give away money for free? Surely, there are roads that need cleaning, trash to be picked up, paving that could be done, public areas that need upkeep, etc. Unless the town of Stockton is perfect, every road brand new, every bit of concrete flawless, etc....why give money to able bodied people and get nothing in return?

Because "entitlement".

I mean, look, they clearly have 500 per month per poor person. That's fine. That's great actually. Give it to them. In exchange for services rendered. Teach people skill sets. Pouring concrete, paving and patching roads? That's an employable skill set. They can't claim the materials cost too much....black top and concrete are cheap. Trash bags are cheap. Lawn mowers, while not cheap, are surely available for park and public space maintenance.

Will each person pay in their 500 dollars, so that each person then receive their 500 dollars from the government?

If thats the case, couldnt we just cut a deal that each person should keep their own 500 so avoid all the government nonsense?

However, if one guy is taxed 2000 and he and 3 people receive 500 from the 2000 that government used their powers to seize, that sounds alot like : from each according to their abilities, to each according to his need

I dont see how low income earners or no income earners that recieve this $500/month is going to help reduce the wage stagnation, or reduce the rate of rise of housing prices or create middle-class jobs or reduce the rate of loss of middle-class jobs. Anyone care to take a crack at that

Car accident victim gets a blood transfusion, do you sit around and complain that blood transfusions don't stop car accidents?

The purpose isn't to solve wage stagnation with this effort, it's to ameliorate the effects of wage stagnation.

Foregive me for my ignorance but doesnt the state swallow a portion or the city and counties debt? Then also doesnt the feds take a portion of the states debt. So things like this that contribute to the city being bankrupt add to the national debt?

What do you mean by "take a portion" of debt? When a state borrows money, it doesn't magically become a debt owed by the federal government, no.

And where would this money come from?

no you didnt...

gas tax is a user fee

Road construction is paid for in a variety of ways, and I pay more taxes than you. So you owe me that money back, right?

AFAIK, not city and county unless they are part of PERS. As I understand it you can choose to join or not but their fees are high due to “insurance” (the state covering shortfalls). PERS is in big financial trouble right now due to overstating expected earnings.

It’s complicated. Feel free to dig it out.
