How do you think Trump would have reacted if China had announced in Nov 2019 that their borders were closed due to a deadly virus and no-one, not even Americans, could leave?

Actually he probably would have done "tit for tat" first, with internment camps in the US for Chinese as well. China would then have jailed Americans in China, the virus would have ripped through them, and THEN Trump would do something actually relevant and effective like ... nah, who are we kidding. You cant create herd immunity in a population where naturally acquired immunity (you get covid) and vaccinated immunity has such a short-lived period. You need to reach a state where the microbe stops circulating actively in a population.

Vaccines ARE working, though perhaps not as intended. The idea was to stop vaccinated people catching the disease at all and optimistic estimates of herd immunity 70% to 80% were based on that. But then it turned out vaccinated people do sometimes catch Covid but have so few symptoms they don't even notice it. On the one hand that's bad, because they can spread it and aren't motivated to take particular precautions (like time off work). But what vaccines have luckily turned out to be great at, is reducing deaths.

This is particularly good in that it directly motivates people to get vaxxed, rather than indirectly through duty to others (which modern Americans aren't that good at.) In light of that, and also costs of hospital if they do get seriously sick, it's a mystery to me why vaccination in the US is proceeding so slowly.

Vaccines are working to save lives; now if only the continue doing so. A new variant with a different spike protein would reset vaccine success against the virus. Maybe "we" as in humanity could accept adjusted vaccines without full testing, but I'm pretty sure "we" as in Americans won't. And if treatments also didn't work, we'd really be in the shit.
