I don't see a second Civil War but I can believe that the America of FIFTY UNITED states may not be a viable entity within the next 20 years.

States’ rights make a comeback as Republicans rush to defy Washington

Several red states are rejecting the authority of not just the federal government – but also the conservative supreme court

The message was blunt: “Texas will see you in court, Mr President.”

The words of defiance came from Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas, making clear that he would not comply with a justice department request to remove floating barriers in the Rio Grande. And Abbott is not the only Republican governor in open revolt against Washington.

In May Ron DeSantis of Florida signed a bill allowing the death penalty in child rape convictions despite the supreme court banning capital punishment in such cases. Earlier this month, Kay Ivey of Alabama signed into law a redistricting map that ignored a supreme court ruling ordering the state to draw two Black-majority congressional districts. The disobedience is sure to score points with the Republican base. It reflects a trend that has seen state parties embrace extreme positions in the era of Donald Trump and Maga (Make America Great Again).

IF the various GOP-controlled states manage to defy the federal government, weakening the feds' power, will China take advantage of this weakness? Will present-day allies move away from US initiatives and requests?

I think it's fine to question Supreme Court decisions like the one precluding the death penalty for child rapists, but the way to do that is from the lecturn to try to sway public opinion, not by passing unconstitutional laws.

What exactly is Texas to do if the Federal Gov't won't hold up its end of the deal and protect the border?
Those states are preparing for that. For example, DeSantis and his little state guard anti work army he's building up. He's also trying to build it up for disaster relief. It won't work, but he's trying to separate Florida from the Federal Government.

No doubt the GOP is tearing this country apart.
And why? To pander to the stupidest in our society.

National guard should be called in to clear it all out and then the federal government should charge the state of Texas the cost by withholding that amount from their federal aid. Done and done.

I'm guessing the bold is a typo, but it's correct nonetheless.

The only rights states have are those that abide federal laws and the constitution. That's it. If they want to start flaunting the constitution, I doubt it will go very far. Talk about deep state--it doesn't get any deeper and stronger than that, even with the makeup of SCOTUS right now. Even they aren't so crazy as to cut off the hand that feeds them.

Hyperbole.

Even when the Civil War we’ve been the most stable democracy in the history of the planet.

Hyperbole?

Are you even serious?

This issue has enabled us to grow apart rather than together.
We would not have the MAGA problem if not for how our forefathers ****ed up with all the state rights shit with all that goes with that.

As to our longevity, you can thanks two oceans and two friendly countries on our boarders for that as much as anything.

Yes, with all my heart.

Stop and think about that. If there were no states rights, and full political authority was centralized in Washington, Trump would have had all that power for four years.

As to our longevity, you can thanks two oceans and two friendly countries on our boarders for that as much as anything.
That too.

When it comes to the border, the Fed Gov't is not living up to its obligation to secure but that doesn't mean any State is looking to separate. They are simply stepping in to fill a void that is directly affecting their citizens.
