And the fact they go after him over the creation of the militant wing of the ANC which was in direct response to the sharpville massacre (when some of them seem to want to start shooting at the government over bullet clip restrictions), and which in its beginnings we're simply acts of sabotage, yes some members murdered but after he went to prison and without his approval. Which is why along with members of the White Security forces, members of Umkhonto We Sizwe also went before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
I am South African, I was born in 1989, I grew up and went to public South African schools and my family owned many businesses during our time there and I am white.
I can tell you that South Africa is far from perfect, Mandela is far from perfect.
In his earliest days indeed he was a socialist, but when you look at the actions of his government when he actually came to power, they resemble NOTHING of what the original ANC charter was in the 60's namely nationalizing mines and banks etc. which never happened, never came close to happening and HE COULD HAVE DONE IT.
But his most important contributions to our country, namely the relative peace he brought was nothing short of a miracle, and while South Africa isn't perfect and still has far to go I know I grew up in a South Africa that was better with him than without him.
I am thankful that he lived and I am saddened that he died.
He achieved the impossible and freed a nation.

Crime is a problem in South Africa and ABSOLUTELY NO ONE IS SAYING IT ISN'T.
Most of it is black on black crime in the Townships that are a direct result of apartheid.
Lack of education, infrastructure in black areas as a direct result of apartheid.
Crime has been slowly but surely decreasing since 1994 but one thing is for sure, it is not Mandelas fault.
Why are you more outrage about crime that occurred after apartheid ended... then innocent blacks being gunned down by a murderous regime?

To the best of my knowledge, Rumsfeld never considered or called Saddam Hussein a brother or named one of his nephews Saddam as Nelson Mandela named one of his nephews Qaddafi.

What about the left sainting a man who was, at one point in time, a terrorist. To me, that is the most remarkable part of the story. That a man with as much anger in him to go into a prison like that, and come out the humble and forgiving man he was, is a testament to his spirit. Let me give you what is, I think, one of the most amazing things I ever heard Nelson Mandela say. We had fun with Mandela when he was in New York, when he came to New York and went to Yankees Stadium.
But I'll tell you, there are very few people that could have undergone what he went through and maintained any sense of dignity or optimism. Most people who had been through what Mandela went through would have spent the rest of their life enraged and bitter and angry and would have tried to get even. In fact, you might almost be able to make the point that there are people in this country who have not lived through horrible times who want to act like they have in order to occupy victim status, but Mandela really did it.
One of the most amazing things that he said -- I love profundities, and I particularly love short, pointed philosophy. Listen to this. "Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies." Is that not great? And it's great because it's exactly right. Resentment doesn't do anybody any good. It is a poison unto itself, and you've seen people like this. You know people, you've seen 'em, who run around constantly filled with resentment or anger over the way they've been disrespected or mistreated, and they can't let go of it.
You don't want to be around them. You lose patience and you want to shout, "Let it go, it's over with, move on," and those who can't literally poison themselves to death. They figuratively poison themselves to death. So here's Nelson Mandela. "Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies." Nelson Mandela actually lived through the indignities, the punishment, the discrimination, the horrors of the South African apartheid system and came out of it.
Do you realize, when he was inaugurated president, he invited as his special guests the white jailers from his Robben Island prison? He literally did forgive everybody. Twenty-seven years of the prime of his life, and he said, "Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies." Nelson Mandela would not qualify as a civil rights leader in this country, with that philosophy. They can't let it go. It's become too big a business. They will not let it go.
Mandela let it go.
